Been given a PS3 that went for repair and the shop found that the disc drive ribbon "was snapped when it was opened", is there anything useful/cool that I can do with it?

It's a fat one with two USB's, unsure of firmware version as I've not powered it up yet. Would be nice to hack it up into a media centre for the living room but research suggests that XBMC on anything other than an OtherOS enabled unit is a bit shit/experimental.

Any ideas or just save time and bin it?

If it is just the ribbon that is borked then replace it for pennies.

If the fittings on the board/drive are borked then use the PS3 as a firestarter.

Might be the old 60gb backwards compatible one, if so it's definitely worth spending a few dollars for the fix.

I'm pretty certain it's not backwards compatible as it's 80GB and got two USB's and not four, that's the way to tell isn't it?

I've already got a working PS3 that pretty much gets used to watch Netflix and the occasional Blu-Ray so I'm not that arsed about putting any money into fixing it as I've got no use for it, just wondered if there was anything cool they could be used for.

If I draw a blank, there may just be a kill it with fire(ing) video as I think it would make a good reactive target for testing some heavy 12G loads and .410 homeloads on...

Stick it on ebay for spare/repairs if it's worth anything.

If you want rid drop me a PM, I've not had a working console since I was about 14, and I have a broken ps3 donor console at work that a friend gave me so could make a working one from the pair. Would be cool to play gran turismo again, haven't played since gt4!
