Afternoon,

I'm looking to reinstall windows on a Dell laptop from about 2009, running vista. My wife has had it for a while and when I used it the other day it was running very slow.

The windows registry key sticker has gone walkies so whilst I have the install disc I no longer have the registry key. I've googled and found various registry key finding programs, do any of them actually work? Any recommendations?

It's been a while since I've needed to do this: is the point where you enter the registry key beyond the point of no return, i.e. windows is uninstalled? Just trying to judge how sure I'll need to be that I have found the correct registry key.

Cheers Karma Thumbs Up

Get a copy of Windows 7, it is FAR superior. Vista is out of support and shit.

I'm not paying for windows and given my wife's occupation I'd prefer that this computer remains legit.

Ring up MS customer support. They'll normally send you one in no time.

Looking into it some more, seems the product key I'll detect is the generic Dell key, that wont be the same as the one that was on the sticker.

Did say that I wont need a key if I use the Dell disc, but I'm 90% sure I was asked for a key last time I did this (several years ago).

Balls.

Will try contacting MS/Dell.
