The deep web

Only read about this recently. Apparently there is a web browser you can download which hides your IP address and gives you access to websites that arent otherwise accessible.
Read a lot of stories, probably a lot are bullshit. But its full of drug websites where you can buy anything you want, hire hitmen (mostly scams), go on forums discussing hacking, bomb making, then more disturbing things like a forum for men who enjoy spreading AIDS and share stories of rape and infecting others.
Anyone been on it out of morbid curiosity?

Invented in the 90's, everyone knew about it by ~2008 - 2009.

How can you only just become aware of it? It's been coming up in the news every few weeks for years now.

IIRC there are several things you people actually mean when they say "deepweb"



Deep web: things that are simply not registered with conventional search engines, usually just databases full of seemingly useless (to the layman) stuff. This actually comprises most of the internet.

Hidden web: Things on the Tor network, or similar hidden service system, might be kiddies porns, guns, etc or might just be normal shit.

Dark web: Things that are "dark" ie, kiddy porn, hitmen, drugs, general illegality etc etc, might be on a hidden service or might just be out there on the normal internet.

The problem is that these terms are pretty much used interchangeably by normal people, which considerably muddies the waters and makes things hard to differentiate.



TL; DR

Not everything on the darknet is hidden, not everything on the hidden net is dark, and most of the internet is deep.

Downloaded a TOR browser.

Diddn't really have a clue what to do with it, played around with it a bit. Came to the conclusion that unless you want something you're not supposed to have & know where to look for it then it's fairly useless.

This is a bit late but eh..

Just type in google images deep web graph, that will give you a very grief summary of what you will come across.

Doing this though make sure you have you web cam covered and that your IP address is registered somewhere else.

You can do this on the Tor browser, once you get scrambled to a different IP just type in yahoo.com and it will redirect you to the right one, for example if you IP address is registered to a France IP address it will come up with Yahoo france.

Because you can still get hacked where hackers use your IP address and access you computer and access your web cam, now why would you want someone knowing what you look like that you don't even know?

Although using Tor scrambles your IP a very experience hacker can get through depending on their skills and the amount of time you stay on the server.
