I did go and buy a ped. A chinese one too!
https://i.imgur.com/EtRoLFo.jpg
It's a Baotian BT49QT- something or other. Two stroke, came with some manuals for a four stroke bike that looks the same as it. 2011, 3000 miles & hasn't been started in two years since the kid passed his driving test. Mum wants it gone as she's moving house, so I picked it up for the sum of £140.
As far as I can see, the fuel is stale & the battery is toast, someones fucked with some wiring - I suspect to de-restrict it by disconnecting the transmission speed sensor, and theres a crack in one of the panels around an inch long. All in, not bad at all!
I've purchased a new battery, a sparkplug, carb cleaner, WD40 and a bottle of two stroke oil for a massive £36 and will attempt to get it running this evening - hopefully it's a simple carb clean, fresh fluids and off we go jobbie.
Why?
Well, a number of reasons.
1. Superped was massive lulz at the BBQ. I can't help but feel that on the road would be great fun for minimum ££.
2. I'm sick to death of getting up two hours early for work to do a thirty mile round trip to drop the other half off at work. She can use the ped, and it's not fast enough to earn her anymore speeding tickets that I'll have to pay for. I live above my workplace so it's really very irritating.
3. A freind is organising some sort of trip on sub 100cc bikes for the middle of next year. This will do nicely once de-restricted & fitted with an assortment of aftermarket engine parts
4. It was very, very cheap.
I did however have to push it 2.1 miles up a hill to get it home as no van & wanted to grab it ASAP at that price. It was dark & raining, and this was not fun. ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

Got to work on the scoot last night.
Popped a fresh battery on it & it cranked over but diddn't fire. Guess I was a little too hopeful that it was going to be that easy.
https://i.imgur.com/s4zbRaA.jpg
Turns out the speedo was set in KPH, not MPH so it's actually done just under 1800 miles. Bonus.
Had a sparking fault caused by dodgy connections to the coil, fixed that. Cleaned carb by spraying carb cleaner down the fuel line (to free the float off) & spraying carb cleaner up the float bowl drain to dissolve any varnish. Re-connected fuel lines, got the plug cleaned & sparking and after a few coughs and splutters, a big cloud of smoke & it ran!
https://i.imgur.com/DP9BDuF.jpg
Popped it back together and went for a test ride. All lights work, brakes are good, engine pulled up to 30mph before hitting the limiter. Unplugged the transmission speed sensor from the CDI unit & ran it up to a mind blowing 36mph. I suspect it will go better when I've taken it for a good run/found a big hill to ride down.
Dashboard also has a nice feature of having a 0-100m timer (I managed to get 22 seconds from a standing start despite having to cross two speedbumps) and the slightly more useful feature of the dash backlighting changing to bright red as soon as you exceed 30mph

Total spend at this point is up to £176.27 (including a litre of 2T oil, carb cleaner & WD40 - and theres shitloads of those left) ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

Paddy brought his ped over & that seemed to work pretty good. I think he's booked it in for Saturday
https://i.imgur.com/PlBnD8Z.jpg
So with that in mind I booked an MOT slot, insured it and rode to the test centre...
34-36mph on the flat, 46mph with a full tuck and a big hill and 24mph going uphill. I had to tape the bars to get the r/h switchgear to stay still when I got there but other than that it seemed okay. I did nearly come off the thing going for supermoto style boot out cornering as the stand hit the floor
https://i.imgur.com/x4G59rx.jpg
It scored a clean pass, no advisories! Very pleased.
Jetwashed it & cleaned it. WD40'd the wheels & matt plastics & waxed the panels up. Im pretty pleased with how it's come up.

Awaiting pics of the Mad powha tuning parts, as then I won't feel so bad for wasting all my money on tuning me bad ass propa crosser 125 with the red and white powerbands fitted!
Seriously, it will be nice to see how much better than 30mph you end up getting this Chinqy ped, and as you document things well and clearly I reckon the thread will be one of the most useful posts on BCF for the Pedbois!
I'll have to try and make a tuning thread for my KMX to show everyone the 1.1119bhp mad gains I could make with a box full of CDI's/Carb's/Reeds/exhausts etc, as maybe it might help guide someone with a race tuned crosser 125, (into the secure mental hospital anyway!) |

Chinese dial is as accurate as a Honda civic speedometer, which suprised me! Will get some GPS data over the weekend with Pirelli Superbiker & see how that compares. Its worth noting that I did disconnect the transmission speed sensor from the CDI, thus removing the 30mph ignition retard - prior to this it would start to struggle at 28-29 and then refuse to go any faster than 31-32.
Offroad pics will likely happen on sunday if the paddyped gets an MOT & my sporty pipe of many wows doesn't show up. However I can't really destroy this if it's to be the other halfs work transportation. Keep in mind we bent the frame on G's at the BCF BBQ!
Talking of which, pre-cbt confidence booster - private carpark, cones etc so she could get a feel for it;

Man, I love mopeds. Because they are cheap and hilarious to chuck around, being so small and slow. *125's are actually a bit boring, sorry Steve I find because they aren't quite fast enough when ridden flat out and if you ride them slow, like a moped speed, it feels wrong choking them up like that.
I nearly bought a KGB summit or other for £50 just to go mental on it.
*By 125's I mean 4t commuter-tools, Varadero, CG, YBR etc. I apologise to those that have and enjoy mentioned 125's. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

I didn't realise some of these Chinese PEDs were 2-stroke, and I thought 2-strokes were killed off with emissions regs before 2011?
More to the point, you and paddy have a duke and triple to play with, why the urge to become ped boi's? ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

I can see that, in the way that 125cc's promise so much and yet deliver so little out in the real world.
But 50cc scoots, I find you have to be pretty impressed with if they can when liberated haul some fat ass geezer to 45-50mph and sometimes even a fraction more!
When you look at it that way, 125's cannot hope to deliver what they promise, especially on sporty fast looking examples.
That's why I need a big bag of tuning bits for mine, and someone who knows how to fit them?
Will still say though, that 125's are the stuff of dreams for me, as they can look proper race track hero or MX champion, even if they are an illusion.
Also things like fancy trick Italian 125's have so many features and gimmicks like USD forks and twin aircraft filler caps, single sided back ends etc and mad supermoto style, where as a fast but boring looking 600/750/900 is fast and smooth and capable, but looks not enough racer! |

I have ridden boatIAIN and was lulzy...
Rode mine pre-MOT today too, was ghetto, at least Iain has keys... for now, I'm a molex kinda guy.

Nothing like a Type R Accord/Honda badge, with some Halfords letters and sparco stickers, respec'! Forks were pitted, no time to fix, gaiters fitted. Selecta.
Ped race is on... assuming this passes.
