Thought at first it may have been a loose something in the cowling but now appears from engine.

Performance seems unaffected.

Any guesses?

Expensive to have CCT changed? Part not that bad and quite accessible?

I would suspect that the valve clearances would be the easiest thing to check first.I have known of high mileage CBR900RRs to not have cam chain tensioner problems, but that may not be the situation in this case.
As the tensioner is situated on the right of the engine a new one would be relatively easy to fit
