Looks like Malaysia or Thailand.
I was there (Malaysia) a few weeks ago and the most I saw on two wheels
was a family of 5.
Dad riding the thing with a little girl sat on his lap who was holding a baby
and a woman on the back holding a second baby. All on a honda 90 looking thing.
They seem to have no real regard over there for safety.
'If Allah wills it to be my time then so be it' seems to be the attitude.

When I am back home in the Philippines, I ride my Kawasaki Rouser 135 with me and my 3 year old son sat on the tank, my wife behind me holding my 16 month old daughter. Not for miles and breakneck speeds, just to the market and back. It's normal for these countries as only the richer have cars. Ok, I got 2 cars as well, but the bike wins for convenience mostly.

Or maybe we have too much regard for it in the UK?

I dunno where the fine line is, but there is one somewhere between blind rule-following dogma and level-headed common sense.

Five on a bike isn't automatically a bad thing.

There was a news report I saw yesterday, in China, which showed people getting mown down and annihilated as they crossed roads (quite shocking for family viewing actually...). The accidents weren't caused by overloaded vehicles. They were caused by poor driving from people in normal cars.

There's nothing wrong having too many passengers. All it does is push the tolerances and capabilities of the machine to a new level. The driver still drives in pretty much the same way.

Also his arm/shoulder got pinched bit the tyre at the same time that he was getting slapped across the head/face by the mud flap

Very close Shocked .

Whenever I filter past big stuff I always think of that video where a rider gets shunted sideways at around 5-10 mph, only to topple under the wheels of a slowly moving lorry in the next lane.

I hate those big open-wheeled trucks - mainly because of that vid. One mistake, game over.

I'm missing your point, are you saying there's no correlation between overloaded vehicles and attitudes towards safety?

It's illegal in the UK to take someone unrestrained in the back of the van, let alone have 5 people sitting on top of a lorry.

Do you have evidence to say that there is?

Hmm, it's like comparing apples and oranges to be honest. They've become more industrialised and developed when personal transport is more affordable. This didn't happen here, or in Europe. We become industrialised, then slowly got affordable personal transport. Our population density is also far lower than in a lot of these asian countries. Not really sure where I'm going with this point, I just don't think that a meaningful comparison can be made.

The Chinese have to be the worst ever drivers in Asia. Really, even though there might be rules of the road you never see them being enforced. I take my life in my hands ever day when my driver picks me up from the hotel. I really need to take some video because no one would ever believe just how bad they are. Their brains (what they have - sound a bit racist) are turned off as soon as they get behind the wheel.

He was only grinning like a loon because he knew he was entirely in the wrong and feared the good kicking he should've got for being a twat.
