So my Renthal Ultra Low bars and Oxford Hot Grips (sports) have arrived. However, while trying to 'dry fit' them the left grip just will not slide on easily. It takes quite a bit of force just to get it half way on.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I don't really want to damage them, and I'm also concerned that the super glue will set before I get chance to place them properly.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The glue will act as lube, and in the case of superglue, the more you use, longer it takes to set as it requires a tiny bit of moisture. I would recommend using a 5 min epoxy as it has better temperature resistance than superglue. I had issues with my throttle grip coming lose and being unusable - riding 20 miles with no grip is far from pleasant.

Dont worry about damaging them, oxfords have a layer of hard plastic in the middle which the element is wrapped around**. The inflexible nature of it is perhaps why they are harder to fit. I recently cut the old oxford rubber off and slid new wemoto grips over the top of the element. Much nicer Thumbs Up

Definitely going to try heating them and seeing what happens - hopefully that will do the trick.

As for the epoxy; I've seen a lot of people suggesting the use of a strong hairspray as opposed to the superglue. So I'm going to give that a shot as well.

Is there any rubber moulding flash on the inside of the grip giving you trouble? I fitted some of their touring ones yesterday and spent a while cleaning them up so they would slide on nicely.

Don't epoxy the right hand side Oxford heated grip to your throttle tube.

Heated grips don't last forever, and Oxford quality even more so. Save yourself having to buy a new throttle tube should you need to replace the grips.

I wouldn't use epoxy at all. Superglue was lube enough. Superglue is brittle once hardened, it's easy to remove a grip that has been superglued in place, so don't be afraid of getting it wrong when fitting - and use more glue as necessary to lube.

Is there an easy technique to do this?

A thin screwdriver inserted between grip and bar, a spray of lubricant or acetone if you have a handy means of squirting it in, and roll the screwdriver all the way around between grip and bar until the grip is able to rotate independently. It should then slide off fairly easily.

Stock grips are effectively superglued in place. It's easier to get stock grips off, as they don't have any wire, just rubber, so are more stretchy.

Brake cleaner works fine, it will act as lube and will dry up over night. Thumbs Up

Is acetone safe to use on a throttle tube you want to keep or will it damage the plastic?

Honestly I don't know. I've briefly used it (or nail polish remover, rather) on a rag to help remove existing glue, it didn't seem to cause visible damage. You'd need to use a lot of acetone for it to make a significant dent in the plastic, IMO.

I've used hairspray on all my grips. Including my standard rubber ones with under-grip heaters. Never had them move.

Mine lasted 50,000 miles before wearing though, even then it was easy enough to break the seal, heat them up and twist forward.
