Hi, I live in a Leasehold property, and don't currently have the option to buy the lease. It's not really a problem, but my leasehold yearly payment has gone up to £200 from £150. On top of this they asked me for a backdated £24 extra payment to cover Jan-June 2014, and are now asking me for another £23 on my next bill.

I've got no idea why, and wondered:
1, How long can they backdate a leasehold payment increase?
2, Can they keep putting up the price of the Leasehold payment every year and as much as they want to?
3, Can I ask for a written explanation of why I'm getting asked for additional payments/backdated increases, before agreeing to pay them?
4, Is there any real serious implications for me If I decided to just pay the new yearly leasehold payment and ignore the £24/23 and or whatever other extra charges they want to throw at me? (how Legal could the leaseholder get over £23 and is it ever worth their cost to pursue me for it?

I think you need a lawyer.

From a careful reading of your lease contract, I can categorically state

You've got me worried now, my lease was £6.75 or a similar daft sum last year but the agent has changed so worried what it might be!

Not looked into buying out the lease as it would have been a silly amount just to find out the cost.

If the property is yours you will have a copy of the lease agreement with all this information on. It'll state what the freeholder is entitled to do with the lease in terms of ground rate increases and frequency. It sounds like you may be getting mixed up with service charges or possibly some maintenance costs though. while ground rent cannot be changed so easily maintenance costs can occure if there is of course collective repair work to do with other flats and so on. Read your docs first.
