"SORN and tax discs
You’ll get an automatic refund of your vehicle tax for any full remaining months when you make a SORN. It will be sent to the address on the DVLA record.

You’ll need to buy vehicle tax if you want to use the vehicle again on the road. This expires your SORN."

As said above the new no actual tax disc displayed system should void the tax when SORN declared (as it should on change of keeper).

You only get full months back though. So declaring SORN in November when tax disc runs out end of November means you get nothing back.

Yes, it is a scam to get more money. However, iirc the official line is it doesn't make much money (in their scheme of things it will not bail out the NHS) so not worth changing the system for the benefit of the plebs customers.

Interesting question.

Pre October, my understanding was no, it did not.

In the future, my understanding is yes, it will.

However, right now, if you still have a physical round piece of paper, my understanding is... uncertain. I honestly do not know if that piece of paper still constitutes the "vehicle license" or not.

DVLA will be convinced that it does not and that SORNing now implicitly surrenders the "license" because Computer Is Never Wrong, which is rather the problem with trusting those feckless spongers.

I was in the same predicament, and it turns out the bike isn't sorn until the start of the new month....I.e. your current tax period expires, sorn begins. Go ride it til tax runs out.

As in tax disc runs out, sorn begins....if its a paper tax disc, then you are right.

Jeez, that's a bugger! My bikes engine was on the bench so it didn't matter, but I sorn'ed it over the phone and she told me it would be active on the first.

Hard luck fella.

I'd hope that's not the case. If your insurance runs out then you need to SORN immediately or else the DVLA send you a box of dead kittens.

Reckon that they might have said or meant that you only get your refund based on the start of the next month?

Sorry, what I meant was I was in the predicament where the tax was expiring, and the mot had run out while the bike was garaged, I couldn't tax it...so sorn'ed it mid month while tax was still running. Sorn came into effect on the 1st after the tax had expired. I am on a multi bike insurance policy so it's still insured. Should get it mot'ed soon once engine is back in, then tax will be done the same day. Thumbs Up
