Would a game capture box that can write directly to a usb memory or SD card be used as an on board video recorder for a permanenty fixed on board bike cam? Do game capture devices exist that write to a drive or memory card directly exist even?

I'm not sure I see the point in what your trying to do, it should work but.......

You would need to buy the Game recorder a suitable camera, find some way of powering all of it off the bike, then do a suitable job of hiding all the wiring. **EDIT and make it water resistant so it doesn't die horribly at the first sign of rain **

when you could buy something like this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HD-720p-BULLETHD-LITE-SILVER-BULLET-HELMET-CAMERA-BIKE-CAM-VIDEO-RECORDER-DVR-/390983284933

and save yourself a whole load of hassle.

I have a helmet cam and a cam on the bikes bars but its a hassle taking it off everytime I park up. Plus the battery life is shite. There are systems for an onboard camera and recorder but they're hundreds of pounds.

Finding a suitable camera is tricky but something will be out there.

I suppose what I mean is relatively cheap. If I could have a built in solution for around £100 that would be good.

Well the option I linked to, can be made built in. Thanks to the long link between camera and box.
Camera mounted under light and out of the way. Box under seat Thumbs Up

If you're going the diy route, what about something like this attached to an adurino
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11418

The one above is pretty expensive but you could probably get one from China off ebay for cheaps

I've got an RPi and thought of using it but haven't even begun to experiment with it.
