Done nearly 23 months of a 2 year contract with o2 but my 500mb data limit is crippling, I can easily go through it in a week. I want to switch to 3 for their unlimited 4g (seems better value than giffgaff at the minute) but wondering if I cancel early will I get charged a fee for the pleasure?

Who are you with at the moment? Check the terms of the contract to see if there is a fee. My guess is that there most likely will be a fee seeing as it's so early.

23 months of a 2 year (24 month) contract?
It'll probably be cheaper to do the final month.
Although I'd guess that there's a 1 month notice period...you may be able to give notice now. Worth checking with them.

With my contract (not O2 mind) if you cancel at that late stage you end up owning them the entire amount as if you had not cancelled at all. That's what the T&C's say, but as you are so close to the end, you could probably ring them up and blag extra data (to start immediately) if you agree to extend your contract/take out a new one. I think most of the phone companies are in to customer retention.

If you already know you're definitely changing then I'd just see the contract out, myself.

You should probably do some research about 3's coverage and data services before taking out a contract, don't believe the adverts.

Also, price comparison sites and hotukdeals have phone contracts too.

I went on their site and coverage seems fine for my area, pretty much the same as o2.

Also checked HUKD which is how I found out about the £15 p/m deal with 3. You can get it monthly but apparently they're changing it soon so it's yearly only for unlimited data, no sources to confirm just a comment I saw.

I wouldn't even go with 3 if the only alternative was to chop of my own penis and attempt to use it as a phone for two years.

Based on watching my girlfriend struggle with them for two years.

I don't have any trouble with 3 myself. I live in the sticks and can get 10mb download speeds on an unlimited data, unlimited tethering contract at £15pcm.

If the coverage is good in your area it's definitely worth a look. Check your workplace and other frequently visited places too though.

Is that this contract? And that's 4G, right?

If so, I might move to Three in January as I'm with GiffGaff at the moment and the goodybag I get will be going up to £15 and that's for 4GB, I may as well move to Three if it's unlimited.

The issue with 3 is their absolutely god awful customer service.

In coming up to six years with Three, I've never had any need to call customer services.

That's my logic as well. Plus charging you extra for 4G is a bit cheeky. I have used GG for years in the past but their prices are going up and up, probably down to o2 really.

I know there is a way of the above contract as a 30 day rolling dohickey, it was on HUKD but apparently you can't use your phone as a hotspot, not that it would be difficult to fool.

I think the plan Nexus Icon is on, might be an older one? I couldn't see any unlimited data/unlimited tethering plans open to new customers when I was looking a month ago.

Obviously there are ways round the tethering rules, I'm sure.

Lucky. They're really not very good.

Until recently 3 were doing unlimited tethering for £15 a month on 12 month contract or £18 on rolling. Unfortunately that's soon stopping, but they are still offering existing customers unlimited non-tethered internet with 4gb tethering for the same prices.
Need to sort something out for that, as it goes. Sad
(Either a big wifi aerial or just use the internet through my phone on the 32" TV.)

I'm probably really going to regret saying about how I've never needed to call their customer service people. Sad Laughing

Have a word with fambo and friends, see if any of them are willing to take over the remaining contract.

You give them the sim, they pay the bills.

I never use tethering anyway so I guess I'm good. As long as I'm getting unlimited 4G I'd be happy, my wifi is slow as hell so I would keep mobile data on all the time Very Happy

Note this will be BILL.....

Given the OP has only ONE MONTH left..... Simply ring 02 and tell them you want to move.

In the mean time get a PAYG for 3 and see if it meets your needs. While coverage charts are good. Its means nothing compared to actual testing in your phone... As the maps do not show the odd black hole where you get no signal due to a building or such.... O find that you need to hang out of the window in your house to get a good signal...
Something like my neighbour who always has to make mobile calls outside Laughing

get a three sim now and use that and don't renew your current o2 contract.

I have had no issues at all with 3, even contacting their customer service was good. I can't get 4g inside my office building reliably, but the 3g is good enough to get 1mb download - which is about the same as what i was getting on o2's 4g netowork.

giffgaff do not do an unlimited 4g goodybag - only on 3g. or it that was the case when I left about a month and a half ago.

Don't even need unlimited, 3GB may do but would be nice to watch stuff in HD and not worry about anything.

Another thing that complicates matters is I want to keep my current number due to applying for jobs and all that crap. It's my understanding that requesting the PAC would end the contract so think I'm best off waiting.
