I have GPS for my car using a PDA and a receiver and they're powered from the cigarette lighter. Would it be possible to somehow modify the part that goes into the cigarette lighter to get power from my bike? I'd imagine there was some way but I'm not really any good at that sort of thing.

I've just bought a GPS device for use in the car and on the bike this year.

I went for a stand alone device though. The batteries should last 20 hours so should be ok for a rideout on the bike without the need for a charge. I only really intend to use it on the way home though. I planned to just ride along without a care in the world and then use it to find my way home! Laughing

I know you can wire directly into the bike's wiring, but I'm not keen to do that just yet.

Buy a female cigarette lighter socket, + and - wires coming from it, + have an inline fuse on the cable, two ring connectors on the end direct onto battery. Then you can use the cigarette/car lead directly into the GPS and the plug.

Don't forget to use waterproof connectors, heat shrink over the cig plug (you can get waterproof caps for them, look in Maplins) and make sure you do use the correct rating fuse (not sure what it is)

It will be fine as longa s you turn the GPS off or unplug it when bike is not running, else it will still draw power.

You could easily wire in a switch also if required.

The above method means no hacking of existing wiring and can be changed from bike to bike, you need not touch your bikes wirign loom AT ALL so no need to fuck the bike up in anyway.

Number of ways to do this.
1st would be to fit a socket. However, depends on where you can put it and they're not that reliable (the BMW type are different and a better connector, doesn't vibrate loose).

2nd is just to cut and strip the wires and plumb it straight into the wiring loom. That way you'll only have the connector into the GPS.

Sorry if this is teaching you to suck eggs but best put in a switched circuit and taken from a relay (about £5 or less from automotive supplier - don't use Halfords, when I asked the response was 'what's a relay' Rolling Eyes).

Can you not just run it from its own batteries?

Using an XDA with the Tom-tom receiver.

Yams, that thought did cross my mind. But I can't seem to find one. Do you know where I can get them?

Tis easy enough to do, you can wire if off any live on ignition feed and it will power it quite happly, go to a car parts shop and get a female cigy plug as yams said, make sure all your connections are on right, soldered idealy and well insulated... fuses are very important!

I had my gps going for a year powered off the rear tail light, scotchlocked in, liberal ammounts of tape, the tail light is only on with ignition so no current draw (but then are you really going to leave your gps on your bike when your not on it???) the cigy adapeter will regulate power to your gps so no need to worry about it going bang.

Batterys are ok but allways run ut at the worst moment, also the bike being bounced about can have your gps turning itself off :/

Which system do you use Mr C? And do you just use it for the strip or on the road too?

www.maplin.co.uk

They are on there as I was looking to do the exact same thing, you'll have to dig around on the site a bit but they are definetly on there.

Also on www.rswww.com

Garmin GPSV

records top speed for the strip but also has door to door street mapping with full satnav turn by turn instructions as well

as long as you remember to load the relevant detail maps before you set off Evil or Very Mad

(sorry, open invite to post this pic again Wink )
