We had loads of good weather this year. I put the best part of 15,000 miles on the bike, most of it in sunshine, with dry roads. It's now winter, got to expect a little rain. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Doing your CBT would be a good start.
Waterproofs, chap. Look for Gore-Tex branding. Army and Royal Mail surplus. Boots, trousers, and you sometimes get light jackets coming up for a reasonable price. Not motorcycle specific, you'll pay £500 and up for a Gore-Tex motorcycle suit.
Wear those in addition to your bike gear. Used is generally fine, it's the "waterproofing" that gives up, so expect that and deal with it by adding it in a separate layer.
You can also try a 1 piece motorcycle oversuit. I say "over" suit, I wear mine over my trousers, but under my jacket.
If you don't want army boots, get waterproof socks. Again, Gore-Tex army surplus (sometimes sold as "boot liners"), or Sealskinz branded.
Hands, forget it. Any glove brand or model that you care to mention will have as many folk telling you that it leaks like a sieve as will assert that it's awesome. Muffs, or be cold and wet. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Riding here is not great overall. Nicer if you can restrict your riding to the quiet back lanes avoiding crazy horse drivers who can't control their vehicle, and the tractors muckspreading all over the tarmac for fun.
But I do like riding here sometimes and at least with the weather you appreciate the good days more.
I would expect to quickly get pissed off with having lovely quiet mountainous sunny roads to pootle around on overlooking the sea and golden sandy beaches and clear blue skys with the roads shimmering in the hot sun, if I had to dash to work in a factory 9-5 every day and not be allowed to enjoy said roads. |

Buy a car if you can. Riding in the wet can be bad for your health (many years commuting year round takes its toll on the joints regarless of whether you fall off or not) and bad for your bike unless you have hours spare to clean it... ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

Doubtful, however Cansa's knees got fucked from one ride so it's entirely possible. |
Yes, but he did a 2 hour ride in just jeans in wet and freezing temperatures. If you are properly protected against wet and cold, I see no reason that this would happen, no matter how often you do it.
As a youngster, I rode a fair bit without proper protection; nothing as extreme as Cansa's example, but you don't feel it so badly when you are younger. If you kept doing it though, I would guess that you could be building up problems that might not manifest themselves until you get older. My suggestion would be that whatever age you are, keep those knees properly protected! (And sometimes I still don't heed my own advice ). ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
