A screamer that will actually push you back in the seat. Unlike the inline 4 250's... Laughing

https://www.suzukicycles.org/photos/GSX/GSX250FX/2003_GSX250FX_slv_side_470.jpg
there was also a katana shaped 80s styled one as well
https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery%20%20A/Suzuki%20GSX%20250%20S%20Katana%201991.jpg

all the jap bike manuafactures had one or two, but the faired bikes were moroe popular, although the bandit 250 got produced in big numbers

I had a zeal for a few weeks. 6 speed and overdrive! It's meant to be styled on a dolphin leaping out of the water. Fun little bike, went like stink for a 4t 250!!

Rare bikes are rare. I had a cbr250rr, want another one but prices are becoming crazy for a novelty toy. I know where mine is but i need a couple of thou to get it back. She still mint though, so it would be worth it.

Are they genuinely fun enough to warrant high prices though? No shortage of IL4 400cc bikes out there cheap, what makes the 250 better/more fun?

I don't get the point either. A derestricted 125cc 2 stroke is just as fast ok maybe not at the top end but there won't be a lot in it.

I wouldn't have a 4pot 250cc either personally.

I don't think you need 4cylinders and the maintenance costs for a 250cc sized engine. The most I'd have is two cylinders but people slate the Kawasaki IL2 250's despite the GPX250 engine making 38bhp at 12800rpm.

Put that in an RS125 or even YZF125R chassis and I think you have a good bike. It would probably be ok in a DT125R chassis or similar for alternative fun.

As an alternative there are some 30bhp 250cc singles that make good transplant engines into 125cc bikes. The Honda CBX250 or Kawasaki KLR/KLX250 or Yamaha SRX250 would all be good in a road bike or a 125cc supermoto etc?

I remember Charlie had a Hornet 250 at the first BCF BBQ. Sounded like a jet fighter, went like stink as well. 20K redline IRCC.

They have a certain zing when you ride them. I saw 130 on the clocks on mine once, probably a real 120. The low weight and 40hp output means they don't really lag behind the 400s much in outright performance, and the they handle like they are on rails. People tend to forget that though 400s are small, they are quite heavy, the cbr400 tipping the scales at almost 190kg wet, whereas the 250 is around 150 wet.

The engines are tiny engineering marvels and the rarity makes people stare, especially with the 20k redline. They are a beautiful niche machine and signify a time when bikes genuinley where at a peak of tech and power output. 190hp specific output in 4 strokes is a barrier we are only just breaching now, and these bikes were making it in the late 80s.

Sadly, the reality of riding 250cc screamers is a distant dream! I miss my old ZXR250C which I had 10 years ago.

https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/v/t1.0-9/183235_4491155711_2177_n.jpg?oh=ba6a90d6501b6d50402ed879fe41703c&oe=55002D86

The only place where we can source replacement parts is Australia, where the learner rules back in the day dictated that they were able to ride 250cc bikes! They are drying up.

I LOVED cornering on the old ZXR. 5th gear and 15k rpm and just watch her fly!

Sounded amazing through any one of London's tunnels

Far from drying up... Learners can ride up to a 650cc over here (aus), without even going on the road during training!

Anyway, any of the 250s are the most common things on the road, so if anyone needs parts, I can sort them out for a small fee.

There's custom kits, brand new original and pattern parts etc.

You looked at the mental redline and they seemed as if they'd be fun. But something like a 250LC would shit in their slippers. Maybe not for outright top speed but certainly for fun. RGV250 would absolutely destroy every IL4 250 on every level...except possibly comfort.

I can see that they had their own unique appeal in the same way as the sports 400's did in the early-mid 90's.

I'm sure a screaming compact 40bhp sporty bike with a howling engine that sounds like your doing 140mph everywhere is fun to a point. But the time has passed for 250's and 400's and no one is going to go the expense of building a high spec IL4 bike as a specific A2 machine, when singles and twins can do the job.

I've never ridden any 250 IL4's, but I think I would prefer the GPX250 engine in 250cc 4stroke bike.

Was thinking in terms of enjoyment to ride. I grew up in an era when 2 star/unleaded was 35-40p a litre. No one cared about fuel economy, except for the inconvenience of running about before you reached the next filling station Laughing
