I was in the pub earlier and there were two men dressed in Nazi WW2 uniform. I walked out after telling the landlord that this was unacceptable, he could see nothing wrong. your opinions please

Context is everything, but IMO I think you're probably being overly touchy, and not in a you and HT way!

Don't worry they probably weren't real Nazi's. A real Nazi would have enforced their view and lack of humour on the landlord of the pub to try to get them ejected. Smile

I'm assuming it was fancy dress for "fun" purposes rather than a political statement.

Offensive behaviour can only offend if you give your consent to be offended. Otherwise it's just individuals exhibiting their lack of taste and showing themselves to have poor judgement.

Looking round the last pub I was in, there were loads of people displaying poor taste - a large woman with flesh coloured leggings stretched over her ample backside and a man over the age of 35 in a backwards baseball cap are just two examples.

I didn't say anything to the landlord, I wasn't offended. I merely finished my G&T and quietly left the pub and went home to the moral high ground, which is where I live.

TLDR: they're just clothes

HTH Thumbs Up

It may have been fancy dress. there was also a white guy blacked up to look like a Rasta but I saw no other fancy dress. it was all in very poor taste and I removed myself as soon as I could.

I don't think there was anything wrong in having complained, Wali.

I am very sad that it's got to the point where the attitude is like "Oh well".

What I'd like to know is:
If you are not outraged by what happened during the Holocaust, what will you all be outraged by?
What do you find outrageous?
What act of inhumanity against another human/human beings would you consider worthy of a war?

almost as old as Wali *sigh*

Hellcat, I may well be older than both of you.

My point is the wearers never gave a thought to the Holocaust when they dressed up. I doubt they gave a thought about any thing much. Hence my comment about poor judgement.

By standing drinking next to a fancy dress nazi no-one is condoning genocide.

They're just clothes, worn by wankers.

Pub I work in :

If its fancy dress and as long as its tasteful and cannot offend anyone then I have no problem with it.

I've worked in places where you are just not aloud a hooded jumper on what so ever even if it is one of they shirts with the hood attached seen them getting turned away.

Wermacht or Schutzstaffel?

Indeed.
Uniformaly-speaking, der Nazis won the war hands down -- or should that be Hände hoch!(!)

Besides, walk into any pub where the order of the day is business suits and what will you see?
A Scheißeload of Gestapo officers, that's what.
Better the Devil you know?

Bit of a drama to be honest and a bit too PC. For fucks sake, anyone who frequents BCF should be able to MTFU and carry on regardless. Rolling Eyes

They might have been on their way to a Sing-Along-A Sound of Music production and stopped for a pint beforehand.

Finland and China among others wore bits of Wehrmacht uniforms as part of the hand-me-down packages they got from the Nazis. Maybe them pubgoers were just Kuomintang cosplayers? Laughing

Have to say I think context and intent needs to be considered.

The context was fancy dress, and their wearing of it was not malicious.

There are a great many outfits that could cause unintended offence to a great many people, but that doesn't mean the person wearing it means to cause offence or even cause controversy.

Just because they were wearing Nazi uniforms, doesn't mean they condone the Holocaust.

It was your right to leave the pub, and I'm glad you did that rather than confront them trying to tell them what they should and shouldn't wear... even if you did try to get them kicked out and failed.

Man up and stop being so over-sensitive....if you dont you will go through life extremely unhappy and looking for ways to be offended.

Any dressing up gear can and will offend someone. Nurses outfit, Vicar's outfit, Nun's gear, Shepherd's, business suit, tart's, etc will offend someone.

I think dressing up as a Nazi ridicules the Nazis rather than offending the 2 million Jews killed or the other millions of other religions/types of minorities they did away with.
