Any tips on what home routers are any good, but not to bad for the wallet.

Currently I have a very old Belkin Route running dd-wrt, which seems to be losing it's life as I speak.

Need something that can handle a few computers, game consoles, home server, phones and laptops. 4 currently wired, the rest on WiFi.
To handle the speeds virgin give out. Currently don't have any WiFi ac products, but most probably will in the future, but that won't matter with my current stuff and file transfer speed.

With all the security vulnerabilities that seem to be found because of manufacture backdoors in there firmware I'd want to put an open firmware like dd-wrt on it. Or if the cost and power consumption is low, with ideas I could build a pfsense box instead.

Any ideas what to look for, avoid. Best nob for cat price.

Upgrading from my linksys wrt54g kit.

I'm on VM

It's good and is ddwrt compatible, but i haven't chucked that on it yet.

i have used TP-Link stuff in the past, they are cheap an seem pretty stable

are you using the netgear super hub thingy from VM?

you will still have to use it, but stick it into "hub" mode, then attach to another router

I don't have VM superHub, just a modem they supplied years ago, although they keep send offers to upgrade for a price Rolling Eyes

I'll have to look at Netgear wndr3700v4 again, the security flaws in the firmware put me off a while back.

I choose the middle of the triangle, cheap as in not computer prices,Good as in not crashing after large file downloads within my network or the internet. Fast? the routers should able to handle speeds given by ISPs, 1Gbps ethernet is what the computers have for now, all average Smile

I've had problems with the netgear you mentioned, very flaky.
I suggest something like the ASUS RT-N66U or RT-AC66U. Gb ethernet, can handle many devices and is reliable. I've never looked at putting opensource firmware on it as I don't see the need.

If you are getting a speed upgrade then you will get a VM Hub.
The basic standalone modem is Docsis2 that only goes upto 20mb (i think).
Everything faster than that is Docsis3 and requires a VM Hub.

Fine here, hooked into a VM Hub (modem mode).
What version do you have?
Have you got the latest firmware?
Any chance you could be a bit more specific with the problems yuo are having?

I don't have version numbers or anything like that, this was a while back. Only had it 2 days then returned it.
It would randomly crash/hang, sometimes you'd 5mins out of it other times it would be ok for a few hours. i updated the firmware but it made no difference. I tried it without having it connected to the net and it was fine.

How technically capable are you?

MikroTik routers are good, come in various flavours and price ranges.

Capable enough for people to come to me when there computer or phone goes nuts Smile
I can read, follow instructions, swear and curse when needed and find the instruction or command that I missed when the world is burning around me. I'd say I'm OK Smile
