laser printer recommendations?

My youngest daughter is at university. She has a Macbook Air. We want to get her a printer for Christmas to use in her room. She doesn't need colour and I'm sick of the ink jet scams (cheap plasticky things that guzzle liquid platinum), so I'm looking to get her a wireless or wired b/w laser printer that is known to work with the Mac. Despite studying physics, my daughter isn't a tech whiz, and I'm a long way away, so I want something that works as close as possible to out of the box.

Has anyone used such a combo? Any recommendations?

I'm in Ruislip, she's in Twickenham. (Yeah, that's not far away in any normal universe, but in London it's 45 minutes to an hour away of the dullest driving/riding imaginable...)

I wasn't really looking for used, but if it's in good shape...?

i bought a monochrome Brother DCP-7055. it was £90, has a scanner/copier function and is pretty quick. wired only.

just replaced the toner for £30, about 1000 pages worth. its going strong so far.

basic nastiest printer you can get, but can be used as a hammer/ door stop/ step ladder etc...

We bought a Samsung monochrome Scx 3400, it works amazingly, toner is cheap for it if you go through eBay. We chose it because we can print from any wireless device using the Samsung printing doodah app.
Worked so well actually we went and bought the Samsung c410 colour laser printer. Again, works amazingly. Once set up, disconnect the USB cables, and stash them somewhere like in the kids bedroom or under the stairs. Send the print wirelessly and voilá.
All you need after set up is the provided power cable plugged in at all times, it auto turns on for your print and auto shuts off when it's done.

Using an old Laserjet5 with a jetdirect network card and uprated memory capacity. They tend to go for about £20 on Ebay and a new toner about the same. Had mine for about 10 years and its only ever needed a new toner once.

Old Laserjets are cheap, reliable and easy to get toners and drivers for, nothing really better for the money.
