Yes you're right, I bow to your wisdom rather than the wisdom of tyre companies that have spent decades and billions developing bike tyres.

You fucking idiot.

Motocross knobblies have lots and lots and lots of tread, but they wear out very quickly on the road and the bike handles like shit.

Plz explain logic?

To deep of tread on a bike tyre would flex causing unstablebility...

They banned slicks in racing because it would enable the vehicle to fall off the road entirely and fly.

Car tyres have a much larger contact patch when means they need more grooves to disperse water, or they'd aquaplane on a drop of water. They have a large flat cross section. Bike tyres are round in their cross section so only have a tiny contact patch and cut through the water.

You never hear of a road bicycle tyre aquaplaning, do you? They can hit 30mph and weight a fraction of a motorbikes weight and yet a road bicycle's tyres will have zero tread.

My road racing bike tyre is 2.8cm wide at it's widest point (don't forget it's curved)

it's completely slick, no tread whatsoever and it's the best grip I've had from a racing bike tyre, it's not possible to aquaplane as the contact patch is too small.

I was gonna say, "suck little tread" is actually the best for roadholding.

Doesn't aquaplane you say? Slicks must be awesome in the wet. Smile
Makes me wonder why the worlds best motorcycle tyre experts cut such deep tread pattern in wet race tyres.

I apologise, posting from my phone and missed the decimal point out, 2.8 cm at it's widest point hence it won't aquaplane.

I've edited the original.

Pretty confident on it, 2.8 at widest point, 120psi, contact patch is only about .8cm wide, used to ride around like a nutcase on it all the time as I couldn't afford motorised transport when at uni.

A bicycle tyre will certainly aquaplane, but you'd need to be going around 60 mph to achieve it, so probably not an issue!

I'm not quite sure how to respond to that. I wouldn't ride a moped with a contact patch that small if it had been dry for three weeks, let alone being proud of that fact that it wouldn't aquaplane....

Like my granddad used to say: It's not the size of your contact patch, its the friction coefficient of your rubber.

Protip: He never said.

The tyres on my bike are made entirely out of tread. 100% tread. That's why I ride so fast. And I can stick to the ceiling in a tunnel.

You are aware I'm talking about a road racing bike as per tour de France, not moto gp aren't you?

Admittedly greasy roads could get twitchy but the only thing to have me off was a zebra crossing on the apex of a corner down a private road, had been painted with the same stuff as retail park car park lines and was wet. Still got the scar on my knee 7 years on. probably the only time I'll ever get my knee down - helped me get my leg over tho, met the wife.
