Insurers want to charge me another £600 annually as I fitted a Scorpion Exhaust Silencer to my Vara. What the crap is that all about? Can that be right? I'll be ripping the bloody thing off again if this is the case!

Bloody hell, my insurers know about every mod on my bike and it made no difference!
They only say they will replace it for standard stuff tho.

My dad was looking into buying a Bandit 1200.. it had a scorpion on, so he was looking into insurance prices for it.

Normal bandit 1200 they wanted something like £50 (Hes an old codger with full no claims)

With a scorpion on they wanted more like £250 Shocked

you have a shit insurance company, change them asap.
on another note
any mods need to be declared to the insurance even if its just new tassles on your harley.
if you go into wales and hit one of thier biker road blocks they will call your insurance to check if you have declared the mobile phone holder.
twats!

They do*.
But that shouldn't mean you can still be a stupid cunt and won't die with a loud exhaust.

It just means people hear you coming BEFORE they run you over.
Or that they can't say "sorry mate didn't see you", which is in fact a classic biker get-out clause, as soon as a driver says that, you have him, admitting for insurance-wise.

On another issue, I suppose whatever the things are I have on the Snarley are clip-ons, and should be mentioned to the insurance people, but ... they were there when I bought the thing. So does that mean I have to "declare" them?

*But seeing as how I currently have fuck-off loud pipes, I would say that, wouldn't I.

Dunno why I'm asking as it's always MCE doing stuff like this isn't it Laughing

I wouldn't go anywhere near MCE. I was stupid enough to fit a Scorpion exhaust but i'm not that stupid. Rolling Eyes

How on earth do MCE get any business?

Every time I do a quote on one of those comparison sites they always want silly money and £1,500 compulsory excess. Laughing

That's funny because MCE offer me the cheapest quotes (still silly money, but decent) for old 125s. So to answer your question, they (most likely, maybe?) get a lot of business from young rider's who find MCE's low premiums appealing, I mean, I sure have!

I wonder why they didn't quote me any more than a standard spec model when I chopped the dent out of mine (they didn't even blink when I told them it also had a nice homemade subframe and a load of other 'tweaks')

That was a quote from Tiger when I looked into insuring both my ZZR1100 and the chopped 'Blade on the same policy, I didn't bother in the end (as the 'Blade is still off the road) but they only wanted just over 200 quid for both on Fully Comp despite knowing that I'd done this to the 'Blade. Mr. Green

Mate,

Just dealt with Tiger and got an awesome quote with all mods declared. Thanks so much. Goes to show that its worth shopping around. Cool

Cheers!

Probably, but then the excess is £1250 for something like a CBF. If you agree to that then you are asking for trouble.

After getting quotes they’re also the only company who kept calling me back and harassing me. They’re the Ryanair of bike insurance.

Insurance on my 600 Bandit was £150 (as a new rider) with no mods, but then realised i hadn't told them about my Scorpion an they said it wouldn't effect the policy cost but would cost £40 to change the details on the policy

that was with Bennets

I'm guessing that Scorpion exhaust is classed as a 'performance' enhancement/modification.
So that would probably account for the insurers opinion they're worth a premium increase as it'll obviously make you more faster so more likely to crash.

I know whenever I've been asked about mods on the 'phone I've always stated no performance modifications. Knowing the calls should be recorded and archived. After all an exhaust is just an exhaust at the end of the day.

Ive never told my insurance about any non standard parts on my bikes, I've heard it makes no difference to the premium, but stating its got a full Acrapovic system, being told the price and then suddenly its standard again seems more dodgy for the recorded phone calls than just playing stupid.

"it was like that when I got it hofficer"

It's potentially not that the exhaust itself makes a difference, but that the kind of person (in an insurance averaged way) who puts them on is more likely to ride enthusiastically and hence make a claim than someone who pootles around on a standard machine.
