Twice now I had to come to Manchester for work, both times I have been out for a curry and beer, both times have been utterly gash.

Mancunians cant have taste buds.

Only one I can remember from a few visits is "Spicy Hut". Although the name sounds gash, the food was awesome. IIRC they won some awards not long ago.

East Z East knocks up a reasonable curry in Manchester but whenever I'm in that area, I find Chinese fare preferable. The Rice Bowl is my favourite.

East Z East in Manchester is indeed great, but the best curry i've ever had is Tandoori Flame in Chorlton (just outside Manc). Fantastic, proper indian food.

it's interesting that you have a basis for comparison Puke

The chicken tasted like it had been frozen and thawed out, the sauce was on a par with something out of jar from the supermarket and it wasn't spicey enough.

I have had better ready meals to be honest

slightly off topic, but over the last couple of years I've noticed that all Indian (and Chinese) takeaways have gone downhill quality-wise. The meat is of poorer quality (tastes defrosted and rubbery), the sauces have become more generic and oily. I've tried about 6 different ones in my city and they are all the same. The only saviour was a Nepalese restaurant which does takeaways, and is proper job

Could be a symptom of changing from competing on novelty, quality and flavour with chippies, to competing on price with similar outlets.

My local Indian has gone all stringy meat, oil and salt, but there's a Thai place opened up that's still producing interesting flavours.

Manchester is no longer the capital of Curry land it seems. I've recently been told its Lincoln.

Though the curry I had in Manchester on a work trip was good, all be it 15 years ago Shocked

Go to the Briton's Protection for a decent boozer especially if you like whisky. It's over the road from the gmex tram stop.

Spicy Hut on the curry mile is great, get the lamb handi.

It's inflation substituting cheaper ingredients for inferior ones, for instance a 20kilio box of chicken breasts used to be £16, it then went to £21 and is now £39 from wholesalers. The cheaper stuff has higher water content due to inflation. Margins are also thinner due to more competition.

Secondly the Chinese and Indians of the 70s 80s 90s and early 00s are retiring or dying off. The ones that lasted a long time were the ones who cared about quality and the long term. Back in the day there were many shops which opened up and shut within 6 months. Though with less competition it was easier to survive.

For instance the Chinese that came in the 70s were mostly Southern Chinese. Ergo we all spoke Hokkien, Hakka or Cantonese. Todays migrants are Fujian, Hunan and Anhui people you... well I can tell by their dialects.

Almost all my parents' generation have retired or died off. Mr Hui nearby is pushing 79 and wants to retire soon. My dad lasted 47 years in the industry and all the tea in China couldn't convince him to go back. He won't even tell me how to make his signature yam and fat pork loaf.

Shops change hands regularly replaced by chancers from those provinces, as such they look to make a very quick buck and vanish before the tax man realises they are there. Therefore don't take into account the long term.

Some do and the ones that do will survive for years to come while shops around them will change hands regularly.

For Chinese ones ask the question: What is the word for shower.

Southern Chinese always say Chung Leung. Mandarin folks will say Zai bak bak.

Ask the same question in a lot of curry houses and the answer is likely to be, 'What's a shower?'

There's loads of decent ones on the curry mile, I'll be buggered if I can remember one from the other mind.

I like Akbars at Deansgate. Theres another one we go to but the name escapes me.

Best curry I ever had was Abdul's in Daventry - it looked naff from outside, we nearly didnt go but twas amazing. My 'air dirts' in the morning were proper foul mind.
