Hi

Someone I know is selling a D reg (87?) 1.4 escort estate. It's horrifically ugly and I sort of want it.

It's done 7,000(!) miles from new and is completely un-fucked with and pretty much rot free.

Worth anything? Ever going to be? Avoid at all costs?

I liked the normal version, but the estate is hurting my brain.
There used to be one that drove around rotherham that had been sprayed with the cadburys boost paint scheme. eugh.

I had an E reg Escort estate back in the mid 90's. I scrapped it when, in 1996-7, it failed its MOT due to essentially being held together with rust. Literally everything had rotted. It was slow, ugly and dissolved into oxide in less than 10 years....

It was used by ladies to take their dogs to do dog things.

In short, who the hell would be hankering for one?

Unless you want a cheap, very basic runabout???

I can't say I'm particularly taken by it - I just wondered if it would be worth getting with the ridiculously low miles on it. With a years MOT and cambelt just fitted it's going for £500.

I do have a car already, though a bigger one may be useful with regards to carrying stuff in the near future, only if it's something that wouldn't lose me cash. A 1.4 escort is never something that I'm likely to get excited about.

Slammed on the floor it could look quite rapey tho

If it's rot free it's a good buy. Mk4 escorts won't be worth anything for a long time yet but they have a retro vibe to them and can be made to look pretty good. 1400 CVH's aren't bad little engines either.

What colour is it?

It's facemeltingly hideous, and I like that.

Buy it.

I think you are looking at around 30 mpg, might get 35 but I'm not 100% sure.

Mk4 Escort chassis was terrible. Absolutely terrible. In fact, everything about it was.

But you'll still get someone wanting it to get it into Fast Ford magazine.

I thought rust was factory fitted on them?

Dad had two when I was growing up, the first was built in Merseyside and was shit and kept for a few years before being replaced with a new G reg one built in Germany which was sold and replaced with an X reg something else.

someone bought it ignoring the fact the 20,000 on the clock was missing a 1 off the front having gone round the clock once

there was a fault manufactured into one of the cylinders on the Mk3 / Mk4 escorts but I don't know which engine - I met the chap who claims to have lost his job over refusing to design it in.

Hated mine. Such a disappointment after my XR3, and even more so as a Mk2 XR2 existed in between them in the timeline. The XR2 was excellent. The XR3i just sucked TBH.

If it's cheap and in good condition, personally I'd buy it.

However bare in mind these can be stolen with a stone. Laughing

I have a 2006 1.4 fiesta if I'm driving reservedly, I'll get 35, maybe 38 on a run if under 70.

I reckon a 20 year older and possibly heavier car would be lucky to get 30.

I think I'm probably going to give it a miss. I don't need it and by the sounds of it they were never good in the first place!

I have a diesel 106 which isn't worth a lot, but does do 60+mpg and I can treat it like a workhorse with no worries.
