You just have to distance yourself mentally from it. Possibly this is a skill that's easier to acquire in London, where you have to constantly tune out infuriating aspects of life all year round.

You can learn to tune out the irritating constant merry tunes unless you really *want* to hear them, i.e., going to a Carols concert, or that fun shouty New York Christmas song. Think of it the same way that you unlisten to your missus, except for key words like "credit card", "pregnancy test" or "dinged the car".

I'm probably lucky that I am at that "kids grown up, but no grandkids" stage, so there is no reason to make a fuss, or get stressed. I was in Asda today, picking up some meringues and assorted other goodies (eaten the meringues already, oh dear!) and there was a couple in there, my age, with a list, who were stressing themselves in every single aisle I strolled into.

Small luxury food shopping trip/s, a couple of decent bottles of something flavoursome (mango Sourz last year, considering chocolate tequila this year, but ended up making my own by inserting dried apricots into some Jamesons a week ago) - and stress-free relaxation in a gently twinkling environment
(although having said that I've not actually put up any lights yet this year, but then I only took down the ones from the-year-before-last about two months ago ...)

Some tasteful decorations and candles that DO NOT smell of cinnamon, snow, apples, or berries - you don't have to clean, dress or even cook anything complicated. You just have to rela-a-a-a-ax

Christmas, I can't fucking wait.

If you don't like it then don't participate. We stopped buying presents and cards a few years ago now, it felt awkward at first but once you're used to it it's very liberating.

Christmas is a commercial greedfest these days and I, for one, am well out of it.
