 |
|
Hey guys,
I have a 1998 hornet 600.
I was riding it today and it cut out as it was out of fuel. I pulled over switched it reserve, no luck, wouldn't start. Found the prime the carb thing, tried that, no luck. With and without choke, no luck. Shook the fuel tank, no luck. Walked to the nearest petrol station, put 4.5 liters in, switched the fuel tap back to on. No luck. Repeated choke and prime and shaking, nothing.
What's next to try?
I suspect it would be air or dirt in the fuel line, but correct me if I am wrong.
Cheers, Olly |

Forgive me for more insulting your intelligence but was the tank actually empty? You didn't just assume it had ran out of fuel, seems a bit strange it wouldn't start once filled up and turned over for a few seconds.. Unless there was masses of shit in the bottom of the tank.
Does it spin the starter motor and try?
Or nothing at all? /kill switch ____________________ Yamaha MT-09 - Triple powerrrr |

Thanks for the replies guys.
Useful to know it doesn't have a fuel pump, so it can't be that that has gone.
I took the tank off this evening, emptied it (there really wasn't very much dirt in the fuel) and dismantled the tap that feeds the carbs.
There are three hoses connected to the fuel tank, one on the right seems to be a breather hose as it goes to nowhere (is not connected at one end). On the left there are two hoses, one which the fuel should come out of to the carbs and one that appears to be some sort of vacuum line connected to the engine.
Upon disconnecting the lines, no fuel came out. This tells me the fuel isn't getting past the tank into the hoses. The tap seemed to work when I played with it, so it makes me wonder if the vacuum hose has failed and the tap is not delivering fuel? If this is the case, there is a spring and diaphragm inside, is it a really bad idea to remove the spring from the diaphragm so that the tap will always be on even when the engine isn't running? The diahragm looks like this:

I have reassembled everything and recharged the battery so it I can try and get it started tomorrow. But I don't hold out much hope. What is my next option?
Cheers, O |
