Hi
Can anyone give me advice on the wiring of a kawasaki gt 550
I'm in the process of rebuilding the bike and have got all the wiring back together. I marked everything so it went back the exact same way but now I can't get the indicators to work, the horns won't work (although there is voltage to them)??
The bike did not have a sidestand switch when i got it and the wires were linked together so i bought a 2nd hand one and fitted it. The stand warning light still flashes so wondered if there's something dodgy with the wiring??
Anyone know anything???

Check your earth connections to start with.

There are some threads in the workshop that list wiring diagrams for a wide range of machines - search for that and see if there's one for your bike. You could also look through the service manual thread and see if there's one available for download - a decent wiring diagram and a multimeter will help. Thumbs Up

The side-stand switch shouldn't affect the horn or indicators, but did the warning light still flash when the wires were shorted together?

One side of the Horn should be live when the ignition is on, the other side goes to earth through the switch - so should be easy to check with a meter.

The horn and indicators have separate fuses, so check both (FS2 and FS5, I think).

You can eliminate the flasher can by replacing it with a wire link - bulbs will be on depending on the switch.

Flasher circuit is: [Ign Live]---[Flasher Relay]---[Switch]---[Bulb]---[Earth]

All bulbs share a common earth, so a bad earth will cause side, head and tail lamps to fail as well.

Thats the funny thing, the headlights and brake lights are working fine
So assume the earth side of things is ok
Could it be the indicator relay gone duff

I haven't taken the sidestand switch out and linked out the wires yet to find out but they were linked out when i got the bike, thats the only change i've made as far as the wiring is concerned

Simply replace the flasher relay with a wire link - indicators will come on without flashing if everything else in the circuit is good. If they still don't come on, it must me something else - fuse, switch, bulb or earth.

Put the side-stand wiring back as it was to eliminate the switch.

Spray some WD40 inside the starter button switch gear . Try pressing the starter button and touching the fuses at the same time. how many wires have you got going to the battery earth. and the battery live. I will look tommorow and count.

The light you are on about. Are you sure it is the side stand light and not battery warning? The standard battery would have a sensor and flash a warning when the acid was low. You may/will have a new battery and it will not have this sensor so the wire is just hanging around somewhere. Take that wire and connect it to your battery live/red. This is the same as my GPz and I did this three years or more ago and never had a problem since.

Update to my problems
Horns were both sticking so sorted
Starter problems were due to manky clutch switch so that's sorted
Still having problems with the indicators as I can't get life in them. Is it possible that some part of the circuit isn't earthed properly? The indicator relay type thing bolted under the battery tray seems to have metal inserts in the bolt holes, is this an earth point??
Also, in the indicator switch gear on the left handlebar, there is a white wire with a green pinstripe that is disconnected from somewhere but has been taped up but I can't find where it's come off from
Any ideas where it goes and what this wire does?? Diagrams are no help
