It's possible that the damp has damaged the CDI unit, but start by making sure it is thoroughly dry.

Remove the spark plug to see if you are getting a good spark, and whilst it is out, do a compression test.

Check wiring connections for corrosion, including earth points, and check battery voltage with a volt-meter. Some CDI units don't work properly on low voltage.

Sounds similar to my problem I fixed. If you remove spark plug and no spark replace cdi. Expensive but fixes it

The started with flat battery after 2 years and did 700 miles ... I know it needs a battery but its not the fault.... Its fault lies deap in the ecectrical system anyone got values for testing cdi and coilon one of these

Coil is easy to test - disconnect the wires from the CDI, and measure the coil resistance with an ohm-meter. Coils usually fail open-circuit, so any reading above zero is a good sign.

You can also try putting 12v DC from a good battery (not your knackered one) across the coil terminals - you should get a spark at the plug when you disconnect one of the terminals.

Testing the CDI, is not a DIY job - best way is by substitution with a known good working unit.

No - I'm saying it is easier to test the coil than the CDI unit, so test the coil first.

If the coil is duff, then replace the coil. (Why would you buy a new CDI unit if you know you have a duff coil?)

If the coil is good, it must be something else - in which case, try swapping the CDI unit next.

If you know someone with the same bike as yours, try putting your CDI unit on their bike, or put their CDI unit on your bike.

If their bike works fine with your CDI unit fitted to it, then it's not your CDI unit that's faulty.

If their bike doesn't work with your CDI unit fitted to it, but your bike works with their CDI unit fitted - then your CDI unit is faulty.

This is the best way to test the CDI unit, I don't know any other way you could test it without an oscilloscope.

If you now know that you have a good coil and a good CDI unit, the next thing to try, is the pulse generator that triggers the CDI unit - and the best way to do that, is by substitution again, unless you know what type it is and have an oscilloscope.

Having said that, most bike ignition systems require a good battery to work at all, so if you already know yours is duff, change it for a good one first!

I said my batter is duff because it doesnt hold charge properly but still useable....as for swapping cdis on bike i dont know anyone so will have to buy another yes i can test the coil .... And the bike broke down with a fully charged battery so why would this be the problem .....yes pulse generator i could see being wrong i have a spark but strength is intermittent i think the coils fine still awaiting better weather to check ..... And my only other options is to buy a new cdi to test that its not the fault

Get a new battery, if it's duff it sure will mess up the ignition circuit
