A similar thing is happening in some mountainous areas of China. But you're not Chinese and tbh can never become Chinese sure you may get citizenship if you do the 7 year thing and renounce your UK passport but you won't be accepted.


My village is a remote northern HK village. It is weird because it hasn't changed since the 60s and it is mostly abandoned but it has its own water supply fields for farming. From the windows you can also see the bright lights of shenzhen.

I don't think this applies anymore.

If Mongolians living in the middle of nowhere had satellite TV, solar panels etc then I guess some sort of arrangement can occur.

Sure, check out a TV series called "life below zero". Quite a few people that pretty much life in isolation and the challenges it presents.

Seems like it'd be a very busy lifestyle, every day spent ensuring your survival, and in the case of living in the US/Canada/Alaska, ensuring a grizzly doesn't tear your head off.

I doubt woodland is cheap to own either. And they prob wouldn't let you build a log cabin there either. That said, if truly in the wilderness then I doubt there will be anyone around to notice and hence give a shit.

I think the concept works better in small groups/ tribes rather than solo, in that workloads and duties are shared.

my old man is pretty much the definition of a hermit,
he lives off the grid almost completely with the exception of a mobile phone in case we want to reach him, and the odd trip into town to buy random stuff like coffee and spices
he grows all his own food, fishes, does a bit of hunting,

he is kind of built for it though, he spent from the age of 15-35 as a deer culler in the back blocks of new zealand bush, almost exclusively by himself, and only used to come out once or twice a year until my old lady got hold of him,

I think if lands useless for farming its not so expensive and I saw an episode of grand designs where a guy lived in woodland and was able to argue he was a "woodland gaurdian" or some such so was able to build a house. He just couldent sell it as such. That was England I don't know if the same wamgle is possible in Scotland. Practical side is less of a problem than organisational and funding.

You could buy a good few acres in the south USA for under 30k, useless hilly woodland is cheaper .

Plenty of deer to eat , nobody is gonna hunt for you on your land to kick you out for a visa overstay , not with the 2 million Mexicans that are doing the same thing .

Buy few acres in quiet area close to small river. Plant orchard. Plant Leylandi screen in middle of orchard. Wait. Discreetly build log cabin hidden behind orchard & Leylandi screen. Only I was outbid on the few acres by someone who wanted to stick nags on it.

Not in the UK. Intensive farming has meant that there is little wild sustenance, and trespassing and poaching is obviously illegal. Farming entirely for yourself is pretty much a no go unless you have a huge huge area which will be stupid money.

I'm not thinking of complete off grid live of the land survival. I could rent my flat out and have a few hundred a month plus do some agency work now and again. I would be Interested in a 12v power system from wind or water or solar power.
