Hi guys, my beloved Bandit is having some battery issues. With it being winter she's not getting ridden a whole lot, but it seems that her battery dies within a week of her last ride/charge. I know trickle-charging at this time of year is a good idea but I live in an apartment block with no plug sockets by my parking space so unfortunately that's not an option.

A couple of months ago my heated grips stopped working. They still get power from the battery (the module on the top lights up) but they just don't make the grips hot. Is it possible that's something to do with it? Possibly something is shorting out and draining the battery when she's stood still?

She's my first big bike and my first winter with one so please forgive any ignorance. How long should the battery last between rides?

The bike is an '06 (but registered '07) and, as far as I'm aware, has never had a new battery.

My first suggestion would be get a cheap multi-meter. Check your battery is holding a charge, if nothing else it will rule out the battery, and a 7 year old battery may well be on the way out if it hasn't been hooked up to a charger/conditioner.

If not the battery, I don't know

I had a brand new battery on my GSX600F in September and a few days ago I went to my bike after it had been stood over a week and it wouldn't start. It turned but it didn't have the power to. A charge for two hours sorted it. I had kinda hoped a new battery would have lasted longer but it didn't. I don't have any heated grips etc. Maybe Suzuki's are just rubbish for holding charge! Do what Baffler186 said, and then if you're none the wiser take a look at the alternator.

you may have something causing a drain on your bike, even when the ignition is off - like an alarm?

The Bandit takes a YTX9-BS battery. They are fairly cheap. If in
doubt, fit a new one.

Good advice from Baffler. Get a voltmeter on it and check the voltage.
You should see 12V or more with the engine off and 14V ish with
the engine running.

Some heated grips have a voltage sensing circuit which powers
them down if the supply voltage drops below ~13V. This stops
them from flattening the battery if you forget to turn them off.
If your battery voltage is low, it is quite likely the grips won't
work or they may only work intermittently.

Hard to put an exact figure on battery life. My 650SA starts after
ten days idle, even if I have the alarm set. I replaced the battery
exactly one year ago.

That's well beyond the average life of a standard bike battery.
Get a new one. I fitted a Yuasa YTX9-BS. So far, it hasn't let
me down. You should still check the charging voltage, just to
make sure the alternator is ok. The Bandit has a particularly
good and reliable charging system, so it is probably working fine.
