Okay, so one of my new years resolutions is to get rid of some of my bike crap in the garage, since I have far too much and need the space to work on the least crap KLE and keep it running.

Question is: I have three spare 500cc engines for the KLE, all with various problems. The first has blown its head gasket and the gearbox output splines are so stripped a sprocket can skip on it;
the second has a sprocket welded on due to the same issue, otherwise is supposed to run well but it came free with the second KLE and I don't trust it in the slightest;
The third is locked solid after it developed an oil leak during a ride and seized up, gearbox is allright though although it uses the stupid keep plate system rather than a nut and washer so it'll eventually chew its sprocket too.

All these engines are junk and not worth rebuilding, but do have some decent parts like water pumps, oil pumps, cams, four pistons etc. Question is what's the best way to get rid of them? The metal itself and some of the parts are probably worth a bit, but should I go to the effort of stripping them down or just flog them on ebay or to a scrappie?

Same goes for the KLE500 frame really, i've taken most of the bits worth saving off so should I sell it online with the V5 or have it scrapped?

eBay them as spares or repair for the quickest and easiest way to get rid of them.

If you've got the time to strip them down then you might get more for all the parts than you would for an engine as a whole but you'll have many eBay derps to deal with rather than just one derp per engine.

He's been quiet of late

As for the engines, I would strip serviceable items and list for £1 no reserve, any money is better than no money if you scrap the lot Thumbs Up

I'd stick them on eBay as a job lot. Stripped splines aren't the death of an engine, or even an output shaft. Any spline that's soft enough to wear out is soft enough to weld and file/grind/machine back to shape. If you want one of them fixed I'd have a go at it.

Can't you build one good engine up? Then scrap the rest?

Id be tempted to strip all 3, and rebuild into one running motor and ebay that. Then bang the other two back together and list with described problems for spares and repairs.

I'd rather weigh the lot in myself, or give them to the pikeys rather than put myself at the mercy of the usual ebay fuckwits.

It's nailed on you're going spend money sending a fucked engine to someone who will then open a dispute about it being "not as described".

They'd be quite welcome to open a dispute saying that the engine doesn't work when it's listed as not working and as being for spares or repair. The seller would win that dispute very easily.

Anyway, cash on collection is the way to go to prevent such problems occurring. Wink

I could probably build one good motor but the problem is i'd have no way of testing it - the only carbs I have are currently keeping the other bike running so it'd be a sold as seen untested deal.

I'd say either ebay the engines as a job lot and ebay the frame as a separate item or just take the lot to the local scrapyard. It all depends if you can be bothered to put up with the dicks on ebay. Are they worth enough to put up with be dicked around?

Why would you take them to the scrap yard when some eBay person will buy them from you? Confused

When people pay cash on collection then eBay can't do anything if the buyer tries to fuck you around. (obviously you still need to play fair and not fuck the buyer around Laughing)

I've got a load of ZZR600 parts that I've been putting on at postage cost (free postage listing) and they've not gone including a belly pan

petrol tank at £1 (collection) and no interest

I did sell an engine that I had been told was re-built but I'd never seen it run.

I listed it as such and it sold quite well. Some bloke from liverpool collected it, paid cash and carried it out the house (by himself) and I prayed that it did run...

I like the idea of stripping down and selling off any decent useful components like water/oil pumps, radiators, pipework, carbs, even a clean spare head etc and aany undamaged side covers, even the clutch basket if it's good.

Bearings, pistons, rings, oil seals, gaskets, and shims are just fit for the bin and worthless IMO.

Good pairs of matched crank cases are sometimes useful for other people, as are cams if not pitted/scored, and maybe the gearbox main/layshaft assembly.

But I cannot usefully advise, as when I'm bored/pissed off or fed up with stuff in the garage I put the lot in the normal domestic waste bin for landfill, as I'm not that arsed about re-cycling.

If you take any heavy stuff to the scrappie, he'll give you scrap value for it, and id probably take the lot there TBH. The reason being is that the more spares get melted down and are unobtainable second hand, it means your bike and it's parts are rarer and worth more to seekers of that machine.

I know people who've done this with car's, and also who are glad to see old cars scrapped that could be repaired or harvested for parts, as it makes their car harder to find and worth more!

I threw my old engine and assorted crap in the metal skip at the tip. It was empty of oil by the way.
ItwSnt worth the effort or trouble of ebaying it as Id never heard it run so I'd have got 3/4 of toss all for it!
