Hi,

My wife had her PayPal account hacked yesterday (don't know how). Anyway we found out when she had an order confirmation from John Lewis for £499.99 for an iPad air 2 paid via PayPal. They were going to collect tomorrow from a Waitrose in Stratford masquerading as my wife.

John Lewis have kindly gave us the email address they provided for their email confirmation.

I'm wondering what kind of retribution we could take? I have to be mindful that they have our home address though...

Is there anyway we can find out who the person behind the email address is? I know there are some smart arses on here with regards to the internet etc.

Thanks kindly.

That seems like an ideal one for JL/Waitrose to wait for them to come to collect and either get the police in or at least get them on CCTV for identification.
Though I guess it's quite likely that the person who turns up isn't actually responsible, but been paid a bit to run an errand.

Best retribution is to get the police involved. A punch up in a major department store won't go down well.

If JL are like other places with C&C they would deny the pickup due to them requiring ID due to it being a PayPal payment, that's how it's been for me anyway. Suppose there are ways around it and I bet most of the time they forget to ask anyways.

JL have already cancelled the order. So likelihood is no one will turn up. In all probability all I can do is report it to the police.

I could put the email address on a spam list I suppose?

A hacker is a person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary.

A cracker, meanwhile, is someone whose purpose is to circumvent or break security measures.

Should have just contacted the police. Same thing happened to bro-in-law. They ordered £1000 worth of goods for pickup in tesco. Police nabbed them when they came to collect. Fucking morons.

Herp de derp.

I wonder what other links she's clicked in e-mails and filled in all her account details to verify her account because of the recent security upgrades. Laughing

If she uses the same password for other accounts then now would be the time to change them.

They're idiots for ordering from John Lewis rather than using more conventional methods for cashing out a paypal account. If they've got any sense and opsec (which I wouldn't count on given that they tried to order from John Lewis with the account) then the email address will be a disposable burner account that can't be traced back to anyone.

Rather than spending time and effort failing with some type of retribution, spend that time and effort trying to edumacate your wife in the art of not being stupid. Thumbs Up

To increase the security of your paypal account...

You can add two factor authentication to your paypal account that sends you a text message with a six digit code each time you (or someone else!) tries to login to your account. https://www.paypal.com/securitykey/

Symantec VIP Access is another option for adding two factor authentication to your paypal account. https://m.vip.symantec.com/home.v

Try using a password recovery on the email address and see what happens?

Just for security's sake, you can also add TFA for Dropbox. I add it for every account I can.

Not at all. I did this and soon received my delivery of two African orphans for the princely sum of 900,000,000,000,000 Nigerian dollars/ month (about £400/month). They don't eat much and rarely steal my stuff Thumbs Up

Its kinda funny but for the last 3 christmas JL have been hit very hard by fraudsters.
Reason they sell nice value items at a good price which can net them good returns via the likes of ebay etc after christmas.
Pick up in store is a bit daft... But if delivered they just ask to pick up from courier dept or wait outside the house and take the goods.

Add in that JL have claimed best sales figures over christmas for each of these years.... Makes you wonder (cynically thinking here)

JL really should have been waiting for the person to pick up and then detain them. But will proberly just be some mug mule and not the brains...
But JL just are not interested in doing this... Which again makes you wonder why. As they are the ones being hit by the loses.... Twisted Evil

But are JL hit by the loss? Or is it PayPal that takes responsibility over the hacked payment method?

Given that I used to work as a 'Loss Prevention Partner' at John Lewis, I can tell you that when the opportunity arises, they do detain individuals committing similar frauds. It takes some forethought and legwork to work with banks and plan for the arrival of the pickup agent, but it happens.

One of the chaps I arrested/detained in the same scenario was charged with possessing items for use in fraud or some such offence, as he had the stolen card used to purchase the items. Plead guilty.

She probably gave the password to somebody via a phishing email, left it logged in on a public computer, or had a really easy to guess password that somebody who knows her has used.

All those are infinitely more likely than the account being cracked, especially since to do that to PayPal accounts, you need to be fairly certain that the account has funds.

Had the order not been cancelled. Then paypal would have claimed the money back from JL. Just the same a banks do via card fraud.

That's incorrect.

If the fraudulant transaction was made via chip&pin or contactless the bank covers the loss.

If the transaction was made by signature, the retailer covers the loss.

This is the reason why retailers don't allow you to use a signature.
