 Posted: 21:23 - 30 Dec 2014 Post subject: Help with a Suzuki GS550 engine Please :( |
 |
|
Greetings, I picked up this 1981 Suzuki GS550 engine recently, its quite 'dirty', the main reason was for a Buggy/Kart build, i can see that it needs a Carburetor and Starter but as i'm not much of a Experienced bike person/teenager, i cant pinpoint all the parts it needs to start or run, i plan on having almost no electrical system in my build other than what is needed for the engine so i was wondering if someone could please help me out as to what i need to make it run and how, would be well appreciated Please . ____________________ Take every chance and Drop every Ounce Fear

Why are you posting a 10 meg rar file when you could post up at least 10 good sized jpeg's for less than a megabyte? No-one is going to want to open that. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Thanks for the reply, i actually plan on dropping the engine in a custom built go kart, i have some experience with building karts, I've built one already and partially a mini bike also, just never used a engine like this, all previous builds were with much smaller engines, so the engine is my concern, completely lost when it comes to these sizes or powerful engines, i have no idea how to start it even if i got the carburetor and starter so im in desperate need of any info on how to proceed in getting it to run ____________________ Take every chance and Drop every Ounce Fear |

Not 100% sue what you need to keep but you will need a wire diagram. This should be the manual
https://www.manualedereparatie.info/en/download/suzuki-gs-550-1983-Service-manual.html
You seem to have a loom so slowly start taking out stuff like indicators if not needed and then relay and fuse. Same with lights and horn if not needed. You will want a starter rely and a start button and ignition. That engine is only about 50bhp and will pull the bike along at 110-115 mph but it was a heavy old bike around 200 kg. It will pull a wee cart along just nicely I think. |

A GS550E was my first big bike
Granted, the GS550 has a formidably strong engine for it's size and day but it's a poor choice for a go-kart engine. It's heavy and the finning on the cylinders is designed to be out in the wind at 70mph, not stuck behind the seat of a slower-moving go-kart. You'd be much better off getting hold of an air-cooled enduro engine, something lighter with bigger fins to cope with the cooling requirement. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Thanks for all the replies, i feel somewhat hopeful already, Ok i will start on the loom and i think i have the tensioner its just seized up for now, i pulled the cover to get a glance, it has the cams and such, My first plan was to get a 05 ninja zx6r motor as i know the GS550 motor is quite heavy but here on my island those aren't too easy to acquire, and its like i saw the engine and just set a goal plus i hate seeing things put aside to waste, especially classics or vintage stuff, I expect it to be an experimental learning process for me with the help of others.
Also Thanks you a ton for that link to the Manual, i have been searching but to no avail, its been helpful thus far and I'm sure it will be always. ____________________ Take every chance and Drop every Ounce Fear |
