if so, what's your "go-to" song?

curious really, as I've been roped in to covering a friends karaoke night a week on Saturday and I've never hosted Karaoke evening before, so I'm nervous to say the least!

hope you are all well, and a happy new year etc.

cheers!

Out of all the things that I either think are a good idea, or can be persuaded to do whilst drunk, karaoke has never been one of them.

Depends on the mood / croud.

Buble - Feeling good..... If you can nail it.

Elton John - your song/ can you feel the love tonight.

Take that - shine/ patience

Stevie Wonder superstition.

Enrique - hero

Robbie Williams - angels.

To name a few.

I even have my own videoke machine. It's really cool and we sit outside and sing and drink beer. Our friends come over and enjoy the singing too and it can get really loud, it's great fun.

The yellow and green machine on our terrace is the videoke machine.

The trick is you need to get someone (usually lands up being yourself) to get up and sing a passable but slightly poor version of a few well known songs. It makes other people think "Well if he can have a go, I reckon I can do as well as that.".

The guy who does my local karaoke is an excellent singer but he always does songs he's not very good at to get others up and having a go.

I usually do Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones to start me off.

I find it very difficult if you can't hear yourself singing from behind the mic. Bear that in mind when you're dialling down the feedback.

The trouble with people doing this in the Uk, is that everyone feels shy or is too self conscious to get up and have a go as they might look silly. Everyone has to compare themselves to the XFactor and think 'I am being judged'
When we sing at home or at other people's homes for parties or occasions it just doesn't matter at all. No one cares if you murder a song, but taking part and having fun is what it's all about. I think the Asian culture difference is the main factor here, just enjoy, sing and have a go. I know I can kill a good song (kill as in never want to hear it again) but who cares, it's fun to make everyone laugh.

Definitely some interesting songs! Some of which i think i can sing whilst leaving a pulse in em!

Interesting theory on the 'make them feel that if you can do it, so can they'. Perfect!

I used to do security in a karaoke bar nearly 2 years ago so can't remember too many of the hits (apart from wonderwall and someone like you by Adele)

Thanks guys!

This.

I cannot see the appeal of going to watch people sing terrible covers of other peoples music, nor would I want to publicly humiliate myself in this way.

Nope.

This is true if you go to poorly organised and badly arranged karaoke nights with terrible DJ s.

I went to a karaoke night every Thursday for over a year whilst at uni. Same guy did it every week and there was only one night I remember where he struggled to get people to sing. Every other night it was packed and quite often if you didn't have your name down by 11 pm, he'd run out of time for you to sing (the night finished at 2).

Atmosphere was fantastic and the quality of singing was incredible really.

Throughly enjoyed it and it was a great way to spend the evening.

Now I've moved I'm struggling to find anywhere that hosts karaoke nights..... to the point where I was thinking of going to a few places and asking if they were interested in me hosting a night there.
