Go on then, I'm interested. What would you have?

Ebay/Gumtree links required as proof said bike could be bought on budget.

Just picked up a VTR1000 51 plate with 23k on the clock for £750 - loads of fun for the money.

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271697976719
Spend the rest on NMRRC entry fees Smile.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Motorcycles-Scooters-/422/i.html?_udlo=750&_udhi=1050&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc

ZX6R, or fireblade for extra-boring. SRAD 750 or lots of options for the 600.
XR600 for dirty stuff that you want to ride to on the road.

Not sure about 'loads of fun' from a Firestorm (I'm presuming it is - very good deal if it's a SP), but would make a nice commuter hack if you don't have tight filtering (wide exhausts not ideal).

A TL-S sold for £20 more, I'd have gone for that over the storm.

I bought my GN250 for £450 on gumtree, which has been 100% reliable and completed a 3500 mile europe tour with nothing other than a new set of tyres and an oil/filter change.

I'm not sure if that falls into your category of "good" but it certainly fits into mine.

I paid £1200 for my ZZR, came with a load of spares including a re-built engine so possible for the budget.

Something like this would float my boat for some cheaper honing
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kawasaki-ZX6R-Ninja-/321618221192?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item4ae1f09888

EDIT - maybe this if I could knock off some money for the front tyre
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1999-HONDA-CB600-HORNET-BLUE-/391018374444?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item5b0a82e52c

Additional edit - shame about the Duke, Iain. If I had the cash I would take that off your hands as it looks like a lot of fun

Oh and if you're trying to save money and don't mind boring - CB1s still seem to be good value (think Garth's one was under £400.)

Check CCT at this point, front might go bang bang otherwise.

Buy on condition rather than price at that price - last thing you want is to sell your bike for £1800, buy a new bike for £1000 then have to spend £500 fixing the new bike.

Buy the best condition, most looked after bike with as many reciepts as possible, but even then stuff could go wrong and you'll be not much better off. Don't forget the cost of changing over insurance, and a years tax - that could be a couple of hundred quid there.

I'd go for a honda hornet. I've had cbr's before and they are great bikes but I've gone off faired bikes so would get a hornet.

Costs half as much to insure as a Bandit 600. Suprisingly cheap Laughing

Lowering?

By far the best bike I've ever had. The only time I've ever felt I wanted more out of it was cruising at 90+ on the French motorways as I simply couldn't keep up with everyone else. I just can't justify eating tesco value beans and not going out ever to keep it...all my bills doubled whent the ex left, and being off season I've no overtime availible at work to compensate.

About £20 last time I belive and new tax laws mean I can do it by direct debit monthly. KTM is also out of tax as of the 1st Sad

Where did all the cheap 1200 Bandits go? Confused

I actually find it more entertaining than a lot of bigger bikes on the road. It's a revvy little thing but still has a decent spread of torque considering.

At least you can actually use the revviness and power it's got. And yes, silly cheap - the one for the missus was £325 with 6 months mot, new tyres and a receipt from July for £215's worth of service.

Anyway. Depends what you need it for.

Early 90's triumph triple. You'd easily pick up a 900 trophy for that sort of money.

Very easy to make naked if you prefer that look too. Just make sure its been well looked after or the sprag clutch has been replaced.

I loved mine. Cracking engines. Very easy to mod too.

However, I will say, if your used to modern bikes, the brakes from this era take a little getting used to......

Honestly, come down sometime and take it out if you're only worried about height.

You'll likely find theres nowt to worry about - I can still get on it with a spare lid strapped to the back seat & my 5ft ex had no issues getting on or off it as a pillion.

Err... 'Cheap and Exiting'.. maybe reverse psycology could be used to good effect here; I mean, you buy 'Cheap and Exiting', you feel really happy at how much you have 'saved' you feel quite happy spending a bit on it, and 'cos its not so 'precocious' ragg it a bit, which tends to incur more hidden costs; Alternatively; you buy something 'nice' and 'expensive', you don't have so much money to 'treat' it to bling; and not wanting to trash it, like to be a little less want to abuse it, so over-all might actually cost 'less' in the long run.

ZZR, loads on eBay. You can get a lot of bike for under £1k with a ZZR D or E model. First 3 I noticed on eBay, didn't check descriptions so maybe dogs. The D model one is massively overpriced you should get a decent D model around £500, a rough one for even less. The late E model for £999 I'd buy if I had the cash, high miles but comes with spare engine.

There is a rough superfour on eBay for £899 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CB-400-/191450102277?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item2c9350ba05 . If you fancied a naked maybe worth a punt. I'd buy it tomorrow if I had the cash (but only coz I already have a ZZR).

ZX6R? This one is under a grand, MOT has lapsed though https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kawasaki-ZX6R-Ninja-/321618221192?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item4ae1f09888

GSXR750.... fcked 6th gear, bet you could live with 5 gears though. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-GSXR-750-/271728105834?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item3f4441d96a

GSXR600 ..... cat C, looks pretty buggered and overpriced but it's been for sale for ages so maybe a lowball offer could get an interesting project, though repair costs would tip you over budget. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-GSXR600-2002-Damaged-Salvage-Insurance-Category-C-/371214605694?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item566e1d5d7e

CBR600F... bit rough looking and I'd prefer a ZZR but here it is https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CBR-600-F-96-/141525377143?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item20f391e077

What's the bike for?
