Will be driving a he'll of alot this year so want to try audio booking .

Anyone know any good free sites or torrents for audio bookers ?

Demonoid was always very good for audiobooks, though not sure how it is in it's new incarnation, KAT and TPB have provided me with other odds and ends, and there's some cool full collections on there (e.g. 30 years worth of 2000AD).

Generally I use myanonamouse.net for all my audio, ebook, and comic needs. Private tracker but it's pretty chilled out; no insane ratio requirements or hoops to jump through. Not sure if signup is open at the mo but I can sort out an invite if need be, PM me.

Actually, your best bet is to start with a voice/some voices you enjoy.

Research voices you have heard, or consider people you like to listen to, listen to samples and see if you like the sound of the narrator's voice and their style. Some of my favourite authors' books have been spoilt because the narrator doesn't match my idea of what the first-person narrative should sound like.

Then work you way into the concept from there, search for books and tapes narrated by people whose voices are pleasing to you. Widens your range of topics as well Cool

What Hellcat says makes a lot of sense, the best book in the world can be made into an ordeal with a bad reader's monotonous monologue. Some old Philip K. Dick stuff was produced by 'Books for the Blind' and was truly dreadful.

The best books are narrated by the people good at 'voices'; though having said that, the Game of Thrones saga that I'm currently listening to is cool enough, but Roy Dotrice makes all these medieval-esque kings and nobles sound like they're Barnsley crackheads...

Highlights for me have been:

Tom Baker: The Boy who Kicked Pigs
Stephen Fry: <Anything>
John Lee: Various Peter F. Hamilton novels
Robert Kramer: Wheel of Time series

Seen alot of Stephen frys name on the sites, not too shabby .

Drab American accents would be unacceptable , otherwise I'm not fussy

I paid for Audible (which was very good- refunded if the books narrator was poor and they gave you a short supplement to test before you paid) and supplemented it with Torrents - the usual sites.

I have since found out that my local library has a huge catalog of audiobooks i can download for free and a large selection of cd/mp3cds to borrow for 70p mostly unabridged. Which is obviously great - legal free books!

I have also started using the audio book bay, I have only listened to one as yet but it was good quality.

I also listen while driving and in my wee corsa find it much easier to use Headphones.

For what it's worth, only time I've found the narrator an issue has been when it was an American 'blind' charity and really poorly done.

Does this help? I got a ton of recommendations and I'm still only halfway through The Wheel of Time. I think I added it up to about 260 hours for the main fourteen books.

Autobiographies I can recommend: Murray Walker, if not a little short. Stephen Fry's first two autobiographies, the third I liked but it won't be to everyone's cup of tea. Also really enjoyed Leslie Philips' autobiography.

Michael Parkinsons is a little... long winded. Lots of 'war stories', if you're into that kind of thing.

I wouldn't discount some of the Radio 4 panel quiz/panel shows too, the News Quiz is still amusing 10 years later, if not in a different way. "There's No Such Thing as a Fish" if you enjoy QI too.

Theres no such thing as a fish is a cracking podcast, but only about 30 mins long. I also listen to Hollywood Babble-On, Midlife Gamer and Doug Loves Movies. All funny and free.

I have only listened to one audio book and it sort of ruined it for me, and that was Personal by Lee Child (one of the Jack Reacher books). The guy that did it was called Dick Hill, and it ruined it a bit. For the two women characters in the book he just raised his voice up an octave or two.
