PostPosted: 22:32 - 05 Jan 2015    Post subject: problems with a new bike Reply with quote

hi , i got a new bike about 9 months ago , a gas gas ec300r .

after about 2-3 months the starter motor started to play up , eventually it broke 4 or 5 teeth of the bit on the flywheel & stopped working .

the dealer changed the bendix & the bit on the flywheel eventually after me phoning him & the importer loads of times over about 6 weeks .

the importer said its no wonder the starter broke as its not ment to be used every day !

today i noticed the starter is now not disengaging till the engine is stopped .

it seems there's loads of people having trouble with the starters not working properly .

now it seems i either try to get them to keep fixing the starter till the bike is 2yrs old then live with it or take the dealer to court & try to get my money back ?

thoughts on what to do please

Remember that it's a competition enduro bike, that is also fitted with a kick start.

Yes , but surely if it has electric start it should work .

Gas gas has now changed the design for 2015 bikes .

Ideally I'd like them to fit a 2015 starter to my bike if the engine is the same .

Can't hurt to try.

I know there was a load of issues with electric start on KTM when they first introduced it on the 300 smoker in 07.

Generally with competition bikes they can and do just use the 'competition bike, innit' thing.

Using it daily, you're certainly not really using it in the way it was originally intended.

(Oh and I have officially been told by gurls when kick starting a 2 stroke that it's extra-cool!)

What do gurls know? A 500 single 4-stroke that starts first kick is much cooler Wink

That thing that nearly choked me at last year's Yorkhill run? It's a menace, and doing the world a favour by not starting up. Razz

I doubt you'll be able to reject it at this point. I'd suggest trying to hold out until the 2015 model comes out, but I'd wonder if there will be any spare starters to be had in the UK.

Might be best to just see what the dealer will give you for it, or get them to sort it again then flog it on and make it someone else's problem. Sorry, but the importer clearly isn't that sympathetic so it'll be a long slog.

If it's fitted, it should work. I very much doubt it came with a sticker saying "NOVELTY PURPOSES ONLY - DO NOT USE". Wink

True, but the "not fit for purpose" may fall short, on the fact that a competition bike isn't designed for the purpose of daily usage.

Gas Gas are a hopeless company to deal with full stop, a few years ago I had to have a barrel replated (nikasil) on a trials bike I owned, I also needed a new B sized piston to finish the job.

The Gas Gas importers could not supply one, no body else could, the factory refused to say when they might deign to make some, nobody cared one little bit, in the end the old piston had a clean up with wet and dry and went back in the thing, I got rid of it a short while after, never ever again would I buy Gas Gas products.

The factory don't care because your in another country and it's a big old "manyana" job, the importers don't care and just blame the factory.

I'll raise you a 600 single 4 stroke.
Ok it was a girl with an 'i' and 'pant wetting' was from being scared more than impressed.

Having one header not really held on to the engine at all it was rather loud.
Said 14 year old managed to jump into the air and spin 180 degrees in a single motion as it fired. Rest of her family who had seen me going to start it and were appropriately amused.

Fitness for purpose is just one of the 'satisfactory quality' conditions in:

I'm actually serious (in principle) about the "DO NOT USE" label, as there's a get out for an issue "which is specifically drawn to the buyer’s attention before the contract is made".

Presumably that wasn't exactly prominent in the marketing, so... how many times should a starter start before it stops starting? Thinking

You don't ask, you don't get.

i'm going to phone the dealer now , the thought of a 200 mile round trip for him to look at it then another 200 mile trip to get it fixed .

when buying the bike it never crossed my mind to ask if it was ok to use the starter just like when i bought my rocket it never crossed my mind to ask if it would brake down if it rained .

But for something designed to be used maybe once or twice per week at the most. Would it be considered to be unacceptable for it to fail if used daily for 9 months?

I suppose it depends on whether it is sold as a vehicle for transport, or whether it is clearly advertised and sold as a competition bike?

So they class running 10 hours a month, as EVERY DAY Laughing

If there are lots of others that have the same issue and the design has been changed in new models.
Then you should have a very good case of "Not fit for purpose" due to design flaw.

So the lads (and ladies) who still live with their parents and spend every waking moment practising for next weekend's competition aren't expected to buy a vehicle fit for purpose?

Quite possibly, however goods should be fit for purpose regardless of whether they are used on the roads on a daily basis or not.
