The wall separating the yards between us and our neighbours is needing to be pulled down and rebuilt before it falls and kills everyone.
It's a brick wall with some render on there, about 5ft high, 10-15ft long

The back wall in the yard deffo needs rebuilding too, that's about 6ft high and 10ft long with a gate/door in it.

I am pretty decent at DIY and other stuff involving power tools and knocking sticks and stuff, but would it be an easy job?

Is it a piece of piss or should I find a real man to do it?

its harder than it looks but not that hard.

I bricked up a window in my garage and made a fair job of it, had to take it down half way through and start again because it went a bit wonky but it turned out alright.

I probably wouldn't start with a whole wall if you have never done bricklaying before, I would get a builder to do it

because this

it falls and kills everyone

You worry too much. It won't kill everyone, just the people standing next to it.

Would using block be easier than using bricks?

Only because it will take less time. Slightly easier to maintain straight lines, conversely looks worse if you do run out.

couldn't tell you, I imaging they would be about the same. its more keeping it all plum, straight and level that's the difficult bit. being a small amount out at the beginning means you'll be a fair bit out at the other end.

I built a knee-high wall across the width of the garden in my last house, where the level changed. Unlikely to fall and kill anyone at that height. It was straightforward enough to do but took a lot longer than I expected. The skill in bricklaying, it seems, isn't in doing it, it's in doing it quickly.

I found bricks easier than blocks because any inaccuracies with positioning / levelling etc were easier to correct in the next course. Blocks seemed less forgiving.

Personally I'd give it a go - best way to learn I guess.

I'd use big blocks too - as big as possible - because I'm lazy Very Happy

Where are you?? You could ask around and try and find somebody on an nvq tht would do it for their portfolio and beer money. I did c&g brickwork at college an its pretty easy tbh. If it's rendered then its cheaper to use blocks, 10 blocks per sq meter about a £ a block. Knock the wall down to ground level. Run a straight course, build up either end and fill in the middle as you go. As you run the first course flip the spirit level rather than drag it across the top incase the level is out slightly.

I did a bricklaying course a while back cos bored and all that. Never laid a brick since but might come in handy for you as practise if nothing else. Not too expensive if you're taking on a project afterwards and it's a skill you'll have for life!

What about this then? No medical bills for Massive Jims, no faffing with mixing cement, no more tiresome neighbours Mr. Green

(^ DIY attempt by a friend for another friend. Miraculously lasted 2 years).

Just don't forget you can screw up really well regardless whether you use brick or block. Make sure you get the mix right, this guy had used way too much sand for most of it. There were also little raised gaps where he'd not laid it straight enough, do that and you're doomed!

Right. (said Fred)
There are two ways of doing this.

The first is to have all of the materials lying in a heap in your back garden.
Go indoors and have a nice cup of tea.

Then run outside towards the heap whilst brandishing a ZXR400 fork leg and shouting
"TURN THE FUCK INTO A FUCKIN WALL, YOU MOTHERFUCKIN MOTHERFUCKER"!

Failing that, try one of these.
as in

Bish Bash Bosh, Guv.
or
Slapdash & Scarper
. . . depending on how it turns out.

Read up alot about it and take your time even if it takes 2 week to build. Check check and check again that its straight the most difficult bit is getting the mix right.

3parts sand/1 part cement, use a small bucket initially to measure out (as you don't want too much until you know how quick you are).
Once mixed don't be tempted to water it down once the remains start stiffening. To make life a little easier, grab a cheap throwaway dustpan brush and use it to dampen off the brick surface.
DON'T be tempted to do it until the frosts have passed.

Use a 1M (min length) straight edge to make sure the bricks are in a good straight line (and obviously a line between points). If you steal dad's best level, take care of it, use the handle end of a lump hammer or trowel to line up each brick NOT the level!

If you are re-using the original bricks clean them up well and make sure you wet the surface before mortaring up.

Easy peasy Wink

Edit: And buy a small tub of Plasticiser, which will make the mortar easier to work with - if you're a cheapskate a good dash of fairy liquid in each mix will do

Always used 3 and a half cement just because thats how the brick layers liked it.
