Hurts, doesn't it.

Felt a bit iffy (stiff neck slight headache) Wednesday afternoon. Spent the night in a hotel drinking and eating and seeing the new year in with a 'bang' with the woman and at about 2 am I could barely move.

Woke up in the morning wasn't really sure if it was a hangover or not. Got home and monged out feeling sorry for myself.

Thursday night/friday/Saturday and Sunday gave me bad headaches, stiff neck/back/legs, aching eyes, big swollen glands (and not in my boxers) and endless rounds of violent shivering and sweating. Temp was over 39 degrees for 3 days topping out at 39.6.

Went doctors sunday who said tonsilitis (never had it before) and gave me some penicillin tablets.

Still feel shit. 3rd day off work (I never take time off). Had 10 tablets along with ibuprofen and paracetamol and although it's keeping my aches and head at a reasonable discomfort, it's still painful to swallow anything.

Pic was taken last night (monday).

It's a whole lot worse if I try and do a manly burp to regain some man points.

When will it end?!

A few years back I had a bout of tonsillitis and have never felt so ill. I slept for three days sweating like a very sweaty thing, not knowing what time of day it was etc. I've found usually within 24hrs of taking the antibiotics the symptoms start to ease, I usually double up the dose for the first day as well.

Ive been doing warm salt water today. I cant notice any difference.

I dont think ive ever drank so much water.

It has given me an excuse not to trim the stubble and i seem to be accumulating a nice beard.

Did the sawbones actually diagnose a bacterial cause or just put you on penicillin anyway?

I had it when I were a lad and spent a week in hospital, delirious, throwing up and being stuck full of needles. This was in Wales though, the last bit might just have been for ritual purposes.

Ill see if the woman has some when i head back later.

Through my boredom i spotted this Mille for sale for about £1250,worth it? Cant figure out why it looks like its been mostly de-stickered. 34k isnt exactly low mileage. 6 months MOT and no history.

It didn't affect me very badly at all. I seem to remember feeling shitty for a day or two, then I was fine except I had this everlasting cough that went on for weeks and weeks. It was only when I discovered the golf ball size lump in my neck I went to the doctors and he diagnosed it.

It kicked the shit out of me for about a week. Get to the chemist and buy a spray for your throat, and stick to hot drinks, they're less harsh than cold ones. I lived off Super Noodles, soft, warm food is the way to go.

I hope you're better soon, it's a horrible illness when you get it properly ie not the 'Sorry boss but I can't make it in today, just today, because I have tonsillitis. Yeah' kind.

Had it a lot as a kid, pretty much yearly. The docs said "if you get it again we'll get your tonsils out" every time.

Last time it was major for me, went in work Monday, had to go home, couldn't swallow, couldn't breath - general death really. Straight to bed, couldn't swallow saliva for the pain so I had to have a cup to spit into .... yeah awful. Kept waking up in the night when automatically swallowing. This went on until Saturday. Emptying the cup every morning was disgusting. I forced myself to drink water but didn't eat til Thursday and that was soup!

Have had problems with my tonsils since I was a kid. They can go very bad, 1st time I had one develop in to a quinsy and ended up having it drained in A&E as it blocked off my airway.
Had been warned of how bad having them removed at my age would be and the time needed off work recovering and all the risks involved.
Had another quinsy this summer and got in touch with a surgeon who does laser surgery. After the consultation, I was booked in 5 days later on a tuesday. Went down to theatre at 9.30am was back in my room by 11am, was eating crisps by 12.30pm and went home at 2.30pm. On the monday morning I was back at work, best thing I have ever done, I sleep so much better as I now dont snore like a pig!

Yeah had it loads when I was younger, but not so much recently. I used to get it so bad the swelling would seal off my airway and I'd lose my voice. It's a right bastard of an illness.

Had it regularly as a kid, at least once if not twice a year.

That combined with ear problems meant the ENT department at the local children's hospital felt almost like a second home.

Get well soon, man.

I get it every winter and it does knock the fck out of you.
Found theses make you just feel a little bit better:
coffee, chicken soup, scrambled eggs, original lucozade.

Because you can take paracetamol and ibuprofen together (1 of each) every 4 hours, space it between the penicillin the docs have given you.

Eg. 0800 - para/ibro, 1000 - pen, 1200 - para/ibro, 1400 - pen.
(and so on until max dose allowed)

I've had influenza only twice in my life. It is horrible.

I've had (bacterial) tonsillitis three times. Each time it has been worse than proper flu.

I usually get 2-3 brief self-limiting bouts of viral tonsillitis every year, and they're not much more than a very sore throat, aching neck and an inability to eat or drink for a day or two.

But yeah, proper tonsillitis is mega bad.
My dad has taken only 5 days off sick in all his working life. 2 days was for swine flu a few years ago, and 3 days was for tonsillitis back when he was in his 30s. My mum said it was the only time she's ever seen him like that, physically couldn't get out of bed. At least when he had swine flu he could get up and drag himself around the house to get himself a drink.

I had it all the time as a kid and eventually had them removed as a teenager. Woke up from the operation with a really sore throat but forced down some soggy weetabix. They tell you all sorts of things you can and can't do but speaking to other people who had them out the advice was varied. From don't eat at all, to only eat soup to eat whatever you like.

I slept a bit more and woke up and ate a burger and chips. That night the nurse asked if I wanted a takeaway so I ate a chicken kebab aswell. The doctor came round the next morning having heard what I'd eaten and sent me home. Was back at school two days later.

My older sister got hers out a few years later, couldn't eat and was off sick from work for three weeks.

And then there are some people who have them removed and nearly die. Know of a few people who had to have a number of units of blood because they could not stop the bleeding after tonsils were removed.
