Piaggio Zip 50 Bogging Issue

Ive bought my step son a Piaggio Zip 50 2004 2-Stroke, it has about 2000 miles on the clock, as far as I can tell its all stock carb, exhaust, etc.
When I bought it it had been sat for about a year so I drained the fuel and 2-stroke and cleaned the carb out.
I starts and idles just fine and when on the stand will rev freely to WOT. But when riding it it will run fine with about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle but any more and it will bog down. If I continue to hold the throttle wide open it will gradually pickup, albeit a bit boggy, but wont run any better than at 1/4 throttle.
The problem seems to get worse the warmer the engine gets, but it will gladly sit at 30-35mph on a flat at 1/4 throttle but when you hit a hill it really struggles at only 1/4 throttle.
The only change I have made is the removal of the restrictor ring from the variator.
I need to take the carb out and check the main jet is correct (53/56 I think it should be) and check the auto-choke is working.
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Im pretty au fait with forums, usually easier to get help if people can see your issue at a glance.
Its annoying as I have a Bandit 600 that I ride to work on but the rear caliper had siezed so Im borrowing the Zip until my new one arrives and Ive noticed this problem on the 20mile ride to work.
Ill have to have a tinker and update with what I find, if anything.
Better check for air leaks in the rubber boots too and check air filter.

probably going to be mixture / jetting .. what type carb is it a diaphram or slide type.. what is the colour an condtion of the plug plug sound like its running with to much fuel to air might be worth re cleaning carb checking float hight ect


I use to have a typhoon many moons ago that use to loose power when warm was down to worn rings... so may be worth doing a comp test

Its a slide type carb. Ill have to take it off and double check everything.
Ill get check the plug after I ride home on it later, maybe I should just get a new one anyway, not like they're expensive.
I think the compression is fine, it feels fine with the kickstart anyway, and its not done a lot of miles.

Thats true i suspose i would try a new plug if its been in there from new at that millage.. has it got a stupid air filter on it ??? or proper box if so just make sure all pipes are good

It has the original airbox on it. Although it was covered in 2 stroke as the muppet who owned had spilt it when filling.
There was a few nasty looking sparkplugs in the little cubby at the front so I chucked them.
TBH I haven't even checked its the right plug, should be an NGK BR9ES I believe. Best to change and gap it correctly first and go from there checking the carb and all the rubber boots and spray some WD40 to check for air leaks.
Everything should be stock apart from the variator ring I removed.

Its horrible going from 600 to 50, but needs must. At least my new caliper will arrive soon.

i would use brake cleaner or carb as its more flammable than wd40
