I Need some help, choosing a bag. I currently have a smallish bag that I can just about get my camera with a lens mounted, 2 lenses, some filter and the normal things like spare cards wired and IR remotes in the bottom half. In the top half which is just like a normal bag I can get my a flash and a couple other bits - maybe some lunch. Tripod gets strapped to the bottom. This is fine is I know what sort of shots I am going out to get.

However not only has my lens collection just expanded by three but I am starting to do more varied shoots where I am not sure what lens, tripod (mono pod is on the list of thing to get) or anything else I am going to need. There maybe times where I would like to carry my home built electronic macro rail which is relatively large and heavy-ish. Then there is the high speed flash controller which while isn't too large is does take space.

now I don't want to be able to carry all of this gear at once, but having enough space to carry a good selection of lenses, maybe the old d50 as emergency back up and being able to swap thing out to carry other bits of gear. being able to carry one or 2 tripods would be very handy.

Are there any recommendations for bags that aren't going to break the bank? I don't even have a car licence so being a ruck sack type bag for carrying on the bike is a must.

Thanks for any thoughts on this subject

I have this for my SLR kit and generally can't fault it.

The one drawback with this type of bag is what a faf it is to stop for a quick shot. The good thing is how secure it feels as there's no way the zip can work open or be opened by anyone else in a crowded area as it's tight against your back.
ideally you have a sort of flexible response and have a smaller bag for the camera and one lens plus bits you are most likely to want for what you have in mind, you really won't want to carry everything all the time.

Lowepro are a good bet.

I agree, but they aren't cheap.

If OP wants a decent camera system bag then it's ££ new, or scrounge around on eBay/Gumtree for pre-loved examples. Otherwise find a bag that is not specifically for cameras and adapt it.

I always start with Lowepro and have a few. I'll also look at Crumpler, but these can be a bit too much style over substance. Manfrotto also worth a look (Manfrotto recently took over the useful-looking Kata brand).

I once bought a new Lowepro case from the US for a bargain compared to UK prices... bought on eBay.com and shipped cheaply and inside a week.

I have this:

Lowepro Pro Runner 450 AW

It's big and bulky but if you want to carry all your stuff then you're stuck with big and bulky. I've taken this one on tour with a rock band around the UK fully loaded and it's been fine and it's been on countless other photo trips with me. I've used it mountain biking before now which was ok but if I was going to spend all day in the saddle I'd seriously think about what gear I needed and would take a smaller bag. I wouldn't hesitate to take it on a motorbike though assuming I needed to take a lot of gear.

It has loads of big straps to spread the load so while it is heavy when fully loaded it is bearable for long stints on your back. It has a removable tripod pouch thing so you can strap a tripod to the front and I've also strapped light stands to the sides as it has bungee points all over it.

It's deep enough to be able to put a Canon 24-70 f2.8L in it end up but you wouldn't be able to put an L series telephoto in there end up. It also has a pouch for a laptop in the back which is handy for on the fly editing or overnight trips.

I've got more gear than fits in the bag but if you can't get everything you need for a shoot in that bag (less huge strobe kits etc) then you really need to do more research on the shoot you're doing before you leave home Laughing

However I mainly use this now although it is smaller it looks much nicer!

It did show some signs of life once I got home a dried it out, but it is no longer having any of it. I may get a reverser ring for it and use it as for macros. blue tac with aperture tong to f1.8 and combined with the macro rail I should be laughing.
