I've got a query about the Piaggio MP3's since the licence changes.

Previously there were two versions, the A and the B1(I think) with the LT's being ridable on the B1 licence.

Now since this has changed and I have a "MIGHTY" A1 , and A (Tri) on my Licence, can I drive any of them or is there still a difference as it's even muddier than before.

I'm just getting bored of my 125's inability to pull the skin off a rice pudding at Mway speeds. A roads are fine, just the inability to keep to 70 up hills is making me want something faster. I'm 30+ btw.

Straight from the 3DLD, A1 lets you drive/ride "motor tricycles with a power not exceeding 15 kW". No limit on capacity, no power-to-weight bollocks.

Sadly, the (deep breath) 2014 'Piaggio MP3 Yourban LT 300IE' claims about 17kW so you'd 'need' to get it restricted a tiny bit.

That's if it's a 'motor tricycle', and if you can't 'drive' it on car entitlement any more. I really can't tell from Piaggio's execrable Nathan-Barleyesque excuse for a website, or bring myself to care.

I've only had my A1 for about 10 months, so I'd have to retake the theory too and I detest the tests, I get incredibly nervous about tests. I fcuk'd up my mod 1 twice simply due to nerves. but as I was taking it on my own 125 £15 is reasonable, if I was on a school 600 the cost would make me even more nervous.

I have A1 so I should be able to ride the 125 model rgardless, but I have A (Tri) so shouldn't I be bale to ride any power level?

Piaggio's website I think is plain wrong, maybe even illegal, as it says you can ride their 500 on a car licence. Which after 3DLD is wrong a new car licence holders get no A(tri) entitlement.

You could ask the DVLA. I'm just citing what the law says.

The Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) (Amendment) Regulations 2012 -

“A1 motor tricycle” means a motor tricycle with a power not exceeding 15 kilowatts;

However, existing (pre 3DLD) tricycle entitlement from B (car) licenses should be grandfathered in, according to gov.uk.

Your previous theory pass is good for 2 years.

That's my understanding. Caveat emptor, I expect.

So even though I have A(tri) I can't ride anything over 15KW? But If I didn't have A1 I could?

I believe that if you got category B (car) before January 19th 2013 then you can continue to 'drive' any trike that you want, regardless of whether or when you ever got any explicit A entitlement.

That's a personal belief though, I'd verify it with the DVLA before committing to anything.

Err...this Piaggio site says car licence ok...

So ties in with being able to ride on a car licence. Just not a car licence issues after 19 Jan 2013! I know this because my wife's interested in one. Has to be LT model as that has the wider front wheels. Or the Peugeot Metropolis 3 wheel scooter...

Well that narrows it down a little. But I assume the older non LT's are still A licence only then and not A(Tri) compatible?

I believe there was a company offering MP3 conversion kits to allow modification to trike width. Trouble is IIRC also needed some vehicle change paperwork/checks for the new category. I haven't looked into it too much with the MP3 LT variants being available. See this site for a little more info where garages for conversion are mentioned. Then there's this thread from 2012.

Also IIRC the modified bikes were mainly intended to be London based for the congestion charge workaround.

Just putting it out there in case it might be an option.
Still would depend when you got the car licence entitlement.

TBH the whole range seem to be LT's only now so I'll keep an eye for any ex demo bikes.
