Hello

my front wheel won`t turn, and seems that Brake Pads are corroded and stuck to Disc

I have tried taking the Calipers off but the screws seems hard to undo

can you please advice how I can go about it ?

Thanks

I get similar. My method, I'm not saying it's the correct method, is to get a rubber mallet and give my caliper a few love taps in all different directions til it frees enough to roll the wheel. Then I go for a ride and rub the rust off that way, be careful at first though, the brakes perform much worse until that layer is gone.

Are you sure it's the pads sticking to the discs and not the brake pistons sticking?

I sprayed the bolts and pads with anti corrosion yesterday and went today hopeful I could get into the caliper, but still stuck, I tried also tapping it gently. I had the same problem few weeks ago, but leaving it for few days was enough to sort itself out. I went through some heavy rain on week end, so it might be that..

I don't know what you mean by the bolts are stuck? Do you mean the bolts that hold the brake caliper to the forks? What tool are you using?

I doubt that pads will corrode to discs badly enough to stay stuck in the space of three weeks.

Try this recent thread for more ideas on 'stuck brakes'

Edit: unless of course said pads are worn out and just steel!!!!

yes those Bolts.

I am using a 15/32 socket from a Rolson tool box, I just realised that the inside of the socket, the edges are slightly worn out. so I ll try to get a spanner or another socket from Wilko or Argos. hope they good enough.

See if halfords have any tools on sale. Don't get cheap tools. You say the tool your using is worn then that can damage the bolt head and then you will have problems.

When mine are rusted into the discs, I think the problem isn't cross corrosion - pad-disc sticking - I think the problem is that the rust layers gets thick enough around the pads, just more than the clearance between the pad and disc.

I'd probably steer clear of Wilko toy tools. You do realise that your bike is built with metric fitting and that imperial spanners probably don't help your situation??

To be fair 15/32 is pretty much exactly 12mm, but I agree he'd be best using metric.

OP do you know anyone with a breaker bar and 12mm socket that would fit it? The bolts are probably just too tight to undo with a normal short ratchet wrench/spanner, would probably undo fine with a 2ft breaker bar. Alternatively try and find a pipe that would fit over the socket/spanner to give you more leverage.

If we are going to debate conversions it's actually smaller than 12mm and could probably be expected not to fit (or be nice and tight) if it were a reputable brand socket, however Rolson are the kind of tools you find in a poundshop and as such are not quite as well made. This socket has been described as being slightly worn and on the rare occasions I've found myself at a mate's wit a crappy toolset I have managed to stretch cheap sockets. (Mind you, I've also managed to split the side wall out of a 19mm 1/2" Kamasa 'Professional' socket in the past and bust various Snap-on 'guaranteed indestructible' type tools)

A standard length 1/2" ratchet should suffice and if you are having problems most people have a box spanner sat in the bottom of their tool box that can be used to extend the handle length. 2' breaker bars are handy but also require a careful hand when playing with small bolts and ally housings!

you might be right!

I went to Halfords and got a 12mm and managed easily with Alan keys as well to get the pads off , but it seems that the pistons are Sticking..

any advice on how best solve this ? saw videos about Brake cleaners, would one from Halfords be any good ?

Cheers Very Happy

you are right, Rolson are not a good quality. Thumbs Down

Did you read the thread I linked to earlier (It also has a handy parts diagram for a cb600)? You are sure that problem is pistons and not the pins the two parts of the caliper are joined with?

(As you have the caliper off it would be a good idea to clean up the body before you start any work, sliding and retaining pins included)
If pistons are stuck then you will have to remove them and clean up both them and the grooves in which the rubber seals are located

I just read it, very informative ..hope Brake fluid is not the issue as this would complicate things for me. how can the pistons have effect on this ?! the pistons moves out with the lever but don't move back by just pushing by hand

I ll try first with cleaining the piston and greasing the pins.

Brake fluid is not going to be your issue (or his!)

Pump the piston out a little way to clean it up then use something to push the piston fully home. Pump out and return a couple of times, if you have a gorilla type grip you may be able to push the piston home but most people need to use a mechanical aid, if it gives resistance using a cramp or pry bar to push it back then you'll need to strip out the piston.

Use a pad of wood of reasonable thickness to prevent the piston from coming out too far when you are pumping it out, you don't want brake fluid passing the seals because you've pushed the piston out too far. DON'T try to hold the piston back with fingers as this could trap them.

Pop the piston all the way out.

Theres two rubber seals. Pop them out too, then get some sort of scraping tool and scrape all the corrosion out from behind said seals.

Clean seals, get a bit of red rubber grease (Bike shops ought to sell it in little sachets for £1, motor factors might too) and cover the seals in it. Refit seals.

Take piston, get some wire wool and scrub all the rust/shit off it. Then cover the outer edge of that in rubber grease too. Pop back in the caliper and it'll slide in really nice and smooth.

Then it'll last & not give you anymore greif. Bit more work, but entirely worth it. Thumbs Up

Well they won't until your pistons compress them ... That's my thoughts on it.

Have you put them back onto the bike and pumped the lever to get the pads onto the disc? After you cleaned them, do your pistons move nice and freely?
