It's already happened in neighbouring borough Southwark, thus I live on a wider than average road (with no schools, hardly any parked cars, a couple of pedestrian crossings and a speed camera) about a mile long, where most of it is now 20mph and the last 500 yards, after it crosses the border into Lewisham, is 30mph (although clearly not for long).

I hardly ever drive the whole length of it, but on every occasion I have, I've had people flashing their lights at me and overtaking dangerously, as I stick to the new and totally nonsensical limit.

Interestingly, the Met have said they don't agree with the new limit and the expectation is that they won't be going out of their way to enforce it.

Nope, on 3 or 4 occasions, I've come closer to having an accident in the last month, than I have in the last 30 years of driving this road, due to other driver's impatience.

If you knew the road, you would realise it's the speed limit that's taking the piss.

Edinburgh was already pretty slow anyway, from the TIP of the A1 to the centre, is hardly blistering pace anyway.

But this shxt will spread, 20mph is roughly my flat mountain bike speed. (Well I'm normally around 18)

How many kittens will be saved?

This is old news here in Bristol....and I've yet to see a vehicle maintain a 20 in a 20....police cars included.

It was only later I learned that the cops aren't terribly interested and now I drive a little faster, but I'm still not going to go mad, because I quite value my licence, working in the motor trade as I do.

You do realise Islington and Camden have had borough wide 20 limits for a while (and the city now does).

Far as I'm aware camera's have not been recalibrated. I did get flashed passing one at 30mph, but didn't receive anything and its never gone off again at that speed.

If police do pull people in 20 zones, they give them a warning. Hence why everyone ignores them. I drive for a living as well, and have no issue treating them as 30 limits.


Nope, because I don't live, work or drive in Camden, Islington or the City, so it hasn't previously been on my radar.

Like you, I don't know if the camera has been recalibrated or not, but I certainly wasn't going to take a chance, because, in my past, I've been done 7 times and banned once, so I'd rather not have that happen again.

If you want to routinely exceed a posted speed limit by 50%, that's up to you, I'll do what I do because I've learnt my lesson, ta.

Exactly what I was going to post.
My road is a 20 road and nobody bothers to comply despite the signs every
couple of lamp posts. What's more the worst offenders and the ones going
considerably faster than 20 appear to be predominantly the women who drive
along my street. Particularly around school times.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the lower limit in place to 'protect'
the kids these women spew forth from their fanjitas?
You'd think the 'salt of the earth' mums would be the most compliant wouldn't you
but it seems the inability to deliver a child to school on time has meant that
the lower limit gets completely ignored by the bulk of them. I honestly wonder
sometimes if they have the slightest idea how fast they are travelling at all???
You do get the odd one who follows the rules, you can hear them doing 4000rpm
as they travel along in 1st gear. I'm not sure whats worse.
Waste of time IMO.

The whole of Salisbury city has been 20mph limited for a number of years already. People generally stick roughly to it though, very few exceed twenty-fifteen.

There are campaigns going on to have the 20 limit extended out of town too. Apparently there are too many people speeding in the 30 limits so making it 20 will put a stop to the speeding..........

If there are speed ramps the 20mph is automatic, no signs needed, certainly the case in N.I as I have been caught out already with them, the bastards in the local council tried to nill me to the wood but I got of the hook, a lot depends on whether the councils or the DVLA put the traps in place.

Just down the road from me there are speed ramps in a 30 limit. Near the speed ramps are signs - they are round with a red border and white background and have a large number '30' on them.

That certainly doesn't appear to be an automatic 20 limit to me.

Road I live on in south west London is 20. Has been for about 2 years now. No one enforces or seems to give a shit. No bumps or calming measures so its just a pointless waste of more street signs.

Progressing at 20mph through Edinburgh would represent a significant increase for most drivers.

The bit in Salisbury centre has never bothered me, I think it's one of the few places where the 20 makes sense with the road layout and the amount of lemming pedestrians walking blindly across the road (especially around that corner near McD's). The formerly NSL bits of country road outside the city (and all over Wilts) that are now 50 limits is what pisses me off.

IIRC they did a trial in Bristol over 2 years and the number of road deaths increased.

Got citation?

IAM claim that serious and minor injuries in 20mph zones are rising. If deaths were rising, I'm sure they'd have crowed about that.

However, that says nothing about whether there's more or less, and more or less serious injuries, on the same bits of road.

My inference is that 30mph zones with high injury rates are being reduced to 20, and injuries are still happening.

Insufficient data for meaningful rant.
