Bike has been stolen, not sure what to do. Maybe doesn't belong in the new bikers bit but didn't know where else to put it.

Police have recovered it, but looks like I will have to pay £150 recovery fee, plus storage at £10 per day, plus new ignition switch, plus someone to pick it up with trailer, as I'm not sure I would want to ride it before properly inspecting it, who knows what other damage has been done that the police guys haven’t spotted? So think it is probably not worth bothering, as bike was only £400.

Maybe I could claim from my TPFT insurance, but that might end up costing even more when it is time to get next policy.

What should I do? I was thinking cancel the insurance, and try not to be too miserable while I save for a new one, seems to be the best option.

Not happy.

Sorry to hear this.

If it's a heap, I agree that I might just write it off. Tell them to do one if they give it "Yehbut, we can bill you for it anyway."

As it turns out, they can charge those fees, but they can only recover them from the person responsible for leaving it where they found it. That would be the thief, not you.

You might as well have a look first though.

Really sorry to hear this, I've just been in exactly the same position, except I am claiming as my bike cost a lot more.
Don't really have any advice to offer, just wanted to empathise.

Lots of the guys on here can give you some advice on how to sort the bike if its not too badly trashed though.

Good luck with it all Sad

My first bike got nicked and never returned. I claimed as a no fault total loss, and my insurance actually went down (although I went from a AJS JS125 to a Honda CBF125).

If it was worth £400, and it is gonna cost you more than that, claim on it.

What's your insurance excess?

Oh, your insurer may pay the release fees. You could ask, hypothetical like.

I wouldn't claim on insurance. Your excess I would expect would be at least £100(see what it says on your policy) and then you will pay more for your insurance for the next few years.

Try phoning a man and van company to get the bike. If it's local I would expect it to cost around £30. If the bike has not been crashed/burnt it might be worth it.

This was a CG? I'd go fetch it if I was you, just ride it back slowly or failing that push it (failing that front wheel off and it'll fit in a small hatchback car).

Ignition switch isn't going to cost much and any cosmetic damage can be tidied with rattlecans or stickers. Unreported to insurers it's not a write off so a decent looking bodge repair should see it hold its value and it'll be cheaper than buying another one.

Yeah, off to have a look at it tomorrow. Will be claiming it back most likely, then riding slowly home with my sister following in car. Any tips on what to look for, other than checking everything is still straight and securely attached? (Tyres, brakes etc are standard pre ride checks, Right? Twisted Evil )

New set of locks is £10 on ebay, for ignition, steering lock and fuel tank set.

I've been pretty stressed out having to cope without the bike, then finding out what the bastards would charge me to get back my own bike, and the well intentioned but contradictory advice from friends and family, made me kinda flip out and make bad choices.

I still don't really think it is worth as much as it is going to cost me, but bus fare until I get a different bike would be even more.

Somebody should make a sticky about this stuff, how to deal with a stolen bike seems to be almost as important as the licence and insurance stuff.

EDIT: Insurance excess is £100, and next years insurance would be £100 more if I claimed, according to a quick look at quotes.

I'd just check at least one brake works and it goes reasonably straight. Laughing

Even sold with theft damage unless it's really fucked you could probably make back the release fee's if you decide to get rid.

Good point. The police found it with a scrote on it using it for other crimes, so it shouldn't be too bad. Hopefully he didn't try to escape through a wall or some such insanity. Off a cliff would have been good though, would have happily sacrificed my bike for that.

Write "paid under duress" on the invoice.

Afterward, you can consider trying to claim the money back.

Your position will be that the authority to charge is in Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 section 102

“person responsible”, in relation to a vehicle, means—

(a) the owner of the vehicle at the time when it was put in the place from which it was removed as mentioned in subsection (1) above, unless he shows that he was not concerned in, and did not know of, its being put there;

(b) any person by whom the vehicle was put in that place;

Don't expect a quick or easy resolution.

I will look into that. I don't understand why the scummer caught riding it isn't made to pay the bill.

Because he's a scummer and he won't.

You want your bike back and you will.

They're billing the wrong person, but they don't give a toss.

In principle you could sue the scummer to make good your losses, but the chances of you ever seeing any money are minimal.

Well, been to see it, is pretty rough looking but shouldn't cost too much to fix. Going to trailer it home, then inspect it properly. If it is too expensive to repair, will strip it and sell the parts, should be able to make back at least what it costs me to collect.

Was quite funny, even though it looks a mess it started on the first kick. The garage guy looked a little surprised.

Afarid not Roger. It's pretty stressful seeing the thing that makes your life more than internet forums all fucked up. I forgot.

To be honest every spare penny is going towards geting myself mobile again, I can't afford all the taxi's, buses, phone calls, and whatever other giberish anyway. It seems that it would cost more than £200 to try to claim £200.

If you are feeling militant and want to take it on yourself, I'm happy to provide whatever info you need, and you can keep it if you actually have any luck. (Knowing they had been poked in the eye means more to me than cash) But otherwise I am trying to move forward, and not stress about the past.

Sorry to be dull.

They absolutely trash the stolen bikes where I live. Often see them on the local parks 15 or more of them sharing around a motorbike with lights on but no number plate, so blatantly stolen. The majority of which come from the nicer, more wealthy estate across the road from them. The police know this and have started informing the victims where the bikes will end up.

Within an hour of a bike being stolen here, you just know it'll be wreaked.

BTW, the majority of stolen bikes around here don't get barrelled or have the barrel tampered with, they hotwire them. Literally a case of finding where to soldier it back on the the barrel. Usually smash the plastics around the ignition wiring off to get access. (They don't bring tools, not their bike, they don't care.)

Also, where ever you got it stolen from, make sure you keep locks and even an alarm on it from now on. They'll be back when they're bored. Either take the one they had, or the one you bought out of the insurance payout. Thumbs Up

OK, update on this.

The dude that robbed it got a 50 day suspended sentence, and 60 hours community service. He was ordered to pay £300 compensation (I dont know where that went, but not a penny to me.) and has been disqualified from from driving for six months.

I got 120 hours community service for being unemployed.

This sperm failure has been riding around on my stolen bike, robbing shit from cars, and he got a fine.

After I fix my my bike, my next purchase will be an alarm. After that, a crossbow. And I will probably get ten years if I use it. I hate this country.

EDIT: WTF? I know it would upset people, so I won't do it, but why the fuck would somebody NOT steal bikes, when it is more legal than having a spliff with your mates?

Sorry for the outburst, I was upset, drunk, and very tired.

I hope you guys are going to tell me I am wrong, But I have been looking at UK laws, and it seems that if I catch some scummer trying to rob my bike, the only thing I am allowed to do is ask him not to.

Self defence has to be proportionate. Defending property with violence is not proportionate. However I'm sure a thief will have some form of pointy tool, so if you "come across" him stealing your bike and he "appears to adopt a posture whereby the metal object appears to be a weapon that makes you believe he is going to attempt to cause you serious injury with it" then you can respond proportionately. Would a brick "that was lying around" smashed across the thiefs head be proportionate if you feared for your life?.... That would be for a jury to decide, as long as you stopped hitting him after he hits the ground I think the chances of you getting a not guilty would be good. Obviously the thief (if he isn't in a coma) is going to claim he didn't attack you but that is his word against yours and as he was stealing your bike his credibility will be limited.

Yes our laws are shit.

The only time you should call the Police is if you have your bike stolen.
If you catch a thief beat him within an inch of his life then let him go after telling him if you see him again he will end up in a shallow grave.

It would also be worth telling him that if he reports you to the Police you will then find out his name at court and snitches sometimes end up with more than stitches.
