I can't make head nor tail of that. Is the new job working for your mate? Or would you be letting your mate down to take the new job?

Anyhow, it doesn't really matter. Trust your gut. Experience is teaching me, over time, that whether I listened to my instincts or not, they were almost always right.

You are generally better off being self employed in that you pay less tax and NI,

But obviously factor in days off / holiday / being ill.

I'd say go for it. Thumbs Up

What would you do?

You're a self employed supermarket who restores cars and you're worried about paying for your own stamps in Yorkshire?

You currently work in a supermarket. I assume your lifelong work aspirations stretch outside of working in a supermarket.

You have an offer to do a job you like, with a guaranteed income that I assume is enough, and should also have the option to make more if the business is successful.

The thing holding you back is the requirement to be self employed, because you know nothing about what being self employed entails.

Have you heard of Google? You can use it to find out how the whole self employed thing works.

You can still claim your 40p/mile expenses for business mileage as an employee you know. There are advantages in being self employed, along with a few more risks. It makes things easier (cheaper) for the business owner if you are self employed.

Do it. If it all goes tits-up, you can probably get another job in a supermarket.

Big question is do you work on cars or do all his fetch 7 carry, making tea etc? If you're actually learning a trade such like welding, wheeling, stretch & shrinking, painting etc and you can work under your own steam with confidence than I'd say it sounds like a good opportunity to set yourself along the path of a trade that's never going to go quiet.

The way I've read this is

You live in Yorkshire and work in a supermarket

You lived in Herefordshire and your mate who is there restores cars

He has offered you a job in Herefordshire

Would job give enough to move back

Is job more important then the family you moved to yYorkshire for in the first place

I'd start here: https://www.literacytrust.org.uk/adult_literacy/adult_literacy_help

Learning how to write in English may well open up even more job opportunities.

If you're only working for him then you won't be self employed.

You 100% trust him as a friend, yet he will be illegally employing you. Asking you to go self employed to save himself cash and legal obligations. Meaning you have less rights, and less legal protection, with no burden to him.

I'd do it, but only if you he took you on as an employee of the business.

Working for a supermarket isn't exactly the heights of job security...

If he's offering you a contract which guarantees you enough money to live on whilst learning a skill, restoring cars is definitely a skill.. What are u waiting for?

Just make sure it's not a mates rates thing and that itl stay professional as it's one good way to fuck a relationship..
