Bah. Telling people what to drive is rediculous. If owning a big 4x4 didn't suit one's lifestyle, one probably wouldn't have been inclined to purchase said vehicle in the first place. Thumbs Down

I'd also like to ban all these 180mph super bikes from out roads, I mean, what does anyone possibly need a bike which is capable of doing 180mph for? Get these dangerous idiots off our roads before they kill more people!!

Just as reasonable and as logical as wanting to ban 4x4's, I neither have a bike or a 4x4, so ban both of them. Razz

Fine, if you are happy with them getting us banned from using bikes.

Why is everyone so keen to screw up the lives of those who they do not share an interest with?

All the best

How popular do you think motorcycles are? what happens when people decide they are dirty smelly and dangerous...?

4x4 are just fashonable, people will get bored of them eventually...

What is it with picking on 4X4 drivers?

What about people carriers that do 10mpg, or white van man, in his company supplied van, for his personal transport for 1?

Or aircraft.......they burn galllons and gallons of high octane fuel, totally out of context with cars.

May I point out to anyone who is interested, that my 4X4 does about the same consumption as my bike, but my 4X4 will carry 5 people and their luggage.......now which sounds more reasonable?

If bike sites like this are to support the abolishment of unneccesary vehicles...........watch this space, motorcycles over 125, and all 2 strokes could be next Rolling Eyes

this "ban 4x4" idea doesn't really stand up to argument

Honda CRV Crash rating 4/5
Vauxhall Omega Crash rating 3/5
Honda CRV Crash Pedestrian Impact rating rating 3/4
Vauxhall Omega Pedestrian Impact rating 2/4
Honda CRV kerb weight 1517kg
Vauxhall Omega kerb weight 1695kg
Honda CRV extra urban mpg 31.4
Vauxhall Omega extra urban 26.65

is an s-class mercedes or a big jaguar or an MPV any more sensible?
does a ferrari or a dodge viper use less fuel than a diesel VW tuareg?
how do you define a 4x4? are those old 4x4 fiat pandas they used to make ok? what about the 2 wheel drive RAV4 toyotas?
what about when the 4wd is switched off on some cars?

this idea started off in america where the so-called SUVs are defined as 'light trucks' so don't have to meet the same emissions and economy standards as 'normal' cars - that isn't the case here
if they want to campaign for fuel economy standards for all cars, then fair enough, but this campaign is just ignorant

I hate it when people mindlessly sign anti biker petitions without any actual knowledge or insight into biking and bikers.
So I won't sign that, because I'm too lazy to research it, in fact my post seems quite mean, just stating my opinion on people who "spam petition" and so on.

Instigator, Okay, lets explore your statement.

My 4X4 does about 30mpg, my bike does about 30mpg, your bike does what 50mpg?

So of those 3 vehicles, bearing in mind my 4X4 carries 5 people in better comfort than most cars, and their luggage, considering a bike carries up to 2 people and very little luggage. Then considering the number of people carried and that you would need 3 bikes to carry 5 people, and still not be able to manage all the luggage, which is now more efficient??

I think this whole campaign is ill concieved, as stated above there are cars that have worse stats than many 4X4's

This is my 4X4

Bye the way, though I got through with ease in my 4X4 the fiesta van behind me is hydraulically locked and had to be pushed out of the way.

Cos you can fit mum and 2.4kids and all their assorted crap for the day in easily. Also they are fairly safe cars to be in, just what you want with all these nutters on their 180mph super bikes commuting to work trying to kill everyone.

......and if you don't need it for the school run, but you do have another use for it? Confused

.......is it being suggested it would be better to have an addidtional car for the school run? ......get real, if thats the car you have you use it for everything, even if you 4X4 need is minimal in terms of mileage. Wink

kasa - I state new vehicles. Your bike would be how old? The RG500 made what, 10-15mpg?? But that bikes ancient, I hold no grudge against that.

Sounds like somebody went ahead and created a website without giving it thorough thought.

I remember seeing the topic on an american talk show whilst in Florida "are SUV's unpatriotic".

Cars with low mpg are fairly nasty, (we had a Jag 4.2 litre, it had 2 petrol tanks), and they do have fairly good child squashing ability, but this is all relative.

Some people just need to live and let live.

4x4's are cool. Too many are sold for the goverment to even think off banning them. Hey, let ban cars so that the bikes can have the roads to themselves. Rolling Eyes . Builders and landscape gardeners sometimes use 4x4's because they need them for work. They're usefull.

Besides, I'm gonna get a Hi-lux next year (hopefully) and carry the ZXR on the back Thumbs Up Much cooler then a trailer.

The global warming bit made me chuckle!

Doing my dissertation of global warming related stuff so I've had plenty of time to read up on it and dispel many misconceptions.

Global warming isn’t proven to be an issue, but many more scientists believe in it than don’t believe in it. Putting that to the side, many people think that global warming is caused by big cars (4x4’s in this country, or just America in general.)

A nice little fact for you - The underground coal fires in the northern regions of China ALONE account for as much as 2–3% of the annual world emission of atmospheric CO2 from burning fossil fuels. This is equivalent to the CO2 emitted per annum from all vehicles in the United States- (Stracher, G.B. and Taylor T.P. (2004). Coal fires burning out of control around the world: thermodynamic recipe for environmental catastrophe. International Journal of Coal Geology ,59, (2004) 7– 17).

So, one group of fires in China release more CO2 than all the cars in the USA. Really think getting a few people to swap from their landies to an escort will make the slightest difference when there are 1000’s of underground fires pumping out GHG’s ??????

Although every little counts, it’s hardly noticeable.

The issue of lack of oil/pertol is a major issue, but we’ve just reached the peak of production so we’ve got plenty of time (50+ yrs I think) before we really start fighting over it.

Stop picking on people and using feeble pathetic excuses that don’t stand up.

The “environmental record” tries to have it in for 4x4’s, but really just says that all diesels are bad.

Think you've got it there Gaz, live and let live.

Instigator, my bike is nearly 13 years old, but how many miles to the gallon does a new Hyabusa, or GSXR1000, or R1 do?

For crying out loud Andy's 50cc 2 stroke doesn't do much better than 30 to the gallon, he is always putting petrol in it.

By the way he is re-taking his test next tuesday morning.

Did I say anywhere that I approved of these bikes??!?!?!

Mental they are, and I admire them but own one I would not. Thats not just for their mpg though.

Say good luck to andy for me, his er5 will be dying to go out for a ride. Although I'm sure you've already seen to that Wink

The fact that only 7% of new cars last year were SUV types - why aren't they campaigning about the other 93% of vehicles all emitting nearly as much, sometimes less C02?

I'm sure banning BM's, Mercs and Jags etc would have more effect. Besides, 4x4's are nothing more than fashionable right now - just look at hip-hop, football - fashion driven, it'll soon change.

Hi

I really cannot see how you get such bad fuel consumption from your bikes. I am getting over 45mpg from a played with 1200 Bandit, and on average 55mpg from an Aprilia RS125. The Used Motorcycle Guide gives 40mpg for the CBR1000, which seems about right.

How you get such appalling figures from the bikes while such stunningly good figures from the 4x4s I do know.

Charlotte used to lift share with someone who had a diesel Ford Maveric. It used to average worse MPG than her Maserati 222 on the same journey. Fairly pathetic that a dog slow diesel (and diesel fuel contains 15% more energy by volume than petrol) could not even do as well as a turbocharged 2.8L sporty coupe.

If we do not want our own interests to be banned then we should think more carefully before calling for bans on others interests. People in glass houses should not throw stones.

All the best

Keith

i get about 35-40 mpg fro my ninja...

i personally dont have a problem with these big 4x4's other than the fact if i was to get hit my one (on my bike) due to how tall they are its fairly likely ill end up under it as it would be hitting me in the waist ribs area (side impact, sports 600).

But meh...if u worry about that kinda crap...,may as well lock yourself in a empty padded room now
