Had a braking issue with the rear sticking on so stripped it down shoes were ok as were springs turned out the cam was stiff as old boots an hardly moved so removed it gave it a good clean with a wire brush brake cleaner and some copper grease all back together and I have a working brake Very Happy this drew my attention to the tail light, brake light ok but no tail light I changed the bulb and all seemed ok tail light on/off brake light on/off but together the brake light went un-noticed turns out the brake light section of the bulb gets power when the lights are switched on and the tail light section of the bulb gets power when the brake is applied, being less bright thus going un-noticed
could it be the bulb I used,it was one from my old Audi?
I'm not great with electrics had a quick look at the wiring under the seat and it looks original,3 pin white block,so don't suspect it's been tampered with by the previous owner.

Sounds like you managed to push the bulb in backwards.
If you look at the lb it has two pins poking out the side that go ito the grooves n the holder the 'bayonet fitting'.
On a single filament indy-bulb, there is jst one lead contact on the bottom of the bulb, and the bayonet pins are at equal heights as it doesn't matter which way you fit it.
On a twin filement tail lamp bulb, there's two lead contacts, and to make sure the right one lines up with the right contact, the bayonet pins are at different heights, so if you fit it upside down, it shouldn't 'turn' in the guides.... only they can.... if you are heavy handed, especially with newer 'cheap' bulbs, the pins will actually push the body of the bulb 'in', and not follow the guide. old, worn and slightly rusted holder? Wont help much.
Get a new bulb.. fit it the right way up.
