I was luky enough to be invited along as a guinea pig for a new Offroad Experience that has opened in Central Scotland not far from Peebles. I've done a wee write up of it here.

https://yodagoat.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/off-road-with-motorrad-centrali.html

TL;DR Take a GS offroad for £60.

Cheers

Mike

What a useless bike Confused

I'm still under the impression these are bought by people as they "wanna do riding round countries init" and then attempt to take them off road. Laughing

Fair play. Nice and honest about them. Nice to actually see a GS go offroad lol.

So, do I still think the GS is too heavy for off road use? Well, yes. there's a reason people use dirt bikes for going offroad, but that isn't what Motorrad are offering with Central Park.

If I happened to be in the area and was flush, would be tempted for the stupidity of it.
TKC 80? Sounds like a poor choice to start with.

Thanks for the write up and comedy vid. Thumbs Up

Is it all 1200GSes then? I'll give that a miss - never mind picking them up, I'd need a stepladder to get on them.

Bit curious if they don't have any G650GS Sertaos, but I guess they're really just interested in selling the big, high margin bikes with all the extras. Fair play to them, at least they're putting their bikes where their marketing is.

thx1138 - Aye, i agree. A wee 250 or something would be much better. But I'm still glad I took the chance of a shot of falling off someone else's GS rather than my own. There's quite a few places you can sneak into if you're careful. Very Happy

Rogerborg - I don't know if they are planning on getting different BMs like the serato or F800 etc. I think if you allready have one of the smaller beemers they will let you on the course with it.

G - They might not have been TKCs but it was a knobbly road tyre that looked like a TKC.

Paddy - they're just missunderstood. Laughing I do loads of camping all over the place and a GS seem to handle the roads up north a bit better and is more chuckable that a VFR or something.

Tried one from 2008 or so? I can get on them just as easy as my Street Triple, plus they have a nice soft seat that you sink into that brings you down a fair bit. If I can manage them easily and I'm 5'6" on a good day...

I'd like to give this place a go, but I doubt they'd accept an A2 as a 'full' licence.

Albigularis - You can always ask. You're not going on the road after all.

I've phoned a few track day companies about the same issue and they need the full A - I'll call and see but I'm not hopeful.

Yea, whatever it was looked pretty bad - the sort of thing you can get away with on a lighter bike when it has half the weight sliding sideways!

Though, not sure if you can get decent grippy dirt tyres designed for bikes this big.

Albigularis - Mention that you read about their "dirty demos" on my blog. It might swing it for you. Twisted Evil

G - Surely you can, at least for the older GS and KTM adventures etc. I dunno why you'd want to though. Better off with a lighter bike for going mental on. The idea behind this is to give folk a wee taster of offroad riding on a big heavy bike.

Had a look at at pictures of the KTM950SE, which is a good chunk lighter and most have not so knobbly tyres.

One of the reasons you don't get car tyre designed like motocross tyres is the weight and power would just rip them apart if they did get traction I would guess - and that being the case, presumably starts to be an issue with bike tyres - they might dig in and grip, but having to shift a third of a ton of bike and rider with a 100hp kick may not be great for the rubber!

The stock Battle Wings on my GS aren't fit for anything other than tarmac, so a mud day on someone else's bike would be cheaper and less hassle.

The 12GS is the Range Rover of bikes. Yes it can go offroad, BUT AT WHAT COST.

I'd much rather be on the G650 x-country or a Sertao something.

I'm the same height as him and I can mount one like a normal bike. I was actually under the impression as well that the 650/700/800 were all taller than the 1200 as well? The 700 I seen at a local dealer was practically a horse with wheels.
