painting swingarm with hammerite paint!

So, the time has came where the swingarm on the zr7 was looking sorry for itself. With buying a car and not having metre deep pockets filled full of money I decided to use hammerite "smooth" silver paint. I decided on this because I felt using the brush will help keep the paint where I want and 2, it was cheaper.

I removed the hugger and used drill attachments to remove the loose bits of paint, rust and dirt. I then used muc off and turps to clean it (I am telling you all this and I am well aware the majority of you could do this job much better than me). I have managed to paint one side of the swing arm and then it got dark! Will do the rest next week as it is raining for the rest of this week. Here is the current state of the swing arm with one side painted.

Done the same myself as a quick fix for rust etc before powdercoating and over a year later it still looks good

CX and some other Honda swinging arms rot like fuck
and many folk were ranting on about getting them powder coated
I've repaired quite a few an found they mostly all rot from the inside out
and the outer coating isnt nearly as important as what's happening inside.

After repair, I drilled strategic holes and flushed mine with oil before painting and they've lasted for years with little sign of further corrosion.
I found Plasticote very good BTW, I was told Hammerite tends to chip easily.
Not sure if true but I went of Hammerite a while back anyway

I think hammerite changed formula (like everything...) I have some very old stuff, and some new - the old stuff goes off much harder and more chip resistant. The new stuff isn't all that bad, but it does seem to take a month or two to get anywhere near what the older stuff is like after a day.

Dotts, remember what I said about getting a decent amount of paint on the tyre and chain for the full-on "painted by brush in the dark by a chav" look

The problem of doing one quick application of Hammerite is that the instructions on the tin suggest doing a second coat within a short period of time in order that the hardening process works correctly.

But then it does look better than it did.

I used the same paint when restoring a DT125LC2 a few years ago and the person who bought the bike said it looked like I had sprayed it on instead of being applied by brush.

Looks a lot better, but you'll need to keep on top of it.


One thing I have noticed is that the new formula silver paint isn't brilliant. Despite being "direct to rust", it doesn't really seem to stop the rust, and doesn't hide it all that well either.


I used some on the edges and centre of some car brake discs, and it only lasted around 6 months before the rust was showing through it quite noticeably.

It won't get paint job of the year but atleast it looks better and will protect the swingarm from any further rust!

I did the inside of a pair of chromed mudguards with the silver hammerite. Can't tell you how shit that paint is. My prep was scrupulous and although the paint went on reasonably well, it was coming off within weeks. Might as well have applied melted chocolate. Really wish I'd used the black version now. In the end I just smeared them with very thick grease, which has done the job. I just whip 'em off and reapply every so often, depending on how much wet riding there's been. Obviously you can't really go down that route with the swing arm - but let me ask this question; have you been using ACF50 on the there as a barrier and preserver? Cos that might help. But if you're going to be relying on the paint alone I'm not at all optimistic. I think there are better anti-rust paints, e.g. POR 15 products, or Rustoleum, which iirc are American.

no offence, but I think it looks fecking awful... I have a personal hatred for things that have been painted without masking/removal.
Nothing looks worse than a motor that's been painted in one lump without removing the engine bolts.


Take some time, remove things and rub it down, it will look like new if you take your time and do it properly.
