I recently acquired a 1982 Honda CM250 and I'm looking for a little DIY guidance. The bike has been sitting for at least a year and hasn't been ridden or ran during that time. It has just over 4000 miles on it. Any suggestions on maintenance that may need done or parts to replace? I've drained the old fuel and oil and replaced the shot battery so far.

Thanks for any help!

pop the spark plug out and give it a clean or replace with a new one.

strip the carb down and give it a good clean with carb cleaner, stale fuel and crap in the float bowl will be a problem if its been left for that long and could possibly have blocked jets or choke circuit.

google has loads of guides if you need a bit of help, you may find some guides in the forum too

once its up and running, listen for knocks and rattles as it warms up, as the valve or spark timing may need adjusting and crank or gearbox bearings may have rusted up a little and may need replacing.
hopefully they arent as bad as mine were after 14 years in the previous owners shed.

then just give all your lights and electrical connections a check, maybe grease up the wheel bearings or WD40 on the joints

Wash, polish and take it for a test run Smile

A lot depends on how well it was looked-after before being laid-up. but I would also check, clean and lube the chain and sprockets, strip clean and check brake system, replacing the fluid.

You could also have some rusting in the cylinder bores, so might be worth dropping some oil through the spark plug hole and turning the engine over a few times - then leave it overnight before firing it up.

Also, check and lube the clutch and throttle cables and clean linkages.

Check tyres for signs of cracking / perishing, and exhaust system for rusting and perforation.
