Hi ,

This morning , after having my bike on for few mins and then turn it off, I saw a smoke as if it was a smoke from burning piece of wood coming out of the exhaust pipe.

is that normal ?

What bike? What colour smoke? What did it smell like? I bet it was just water vapour on a cold morning.

White smoke = water condensation (or burning the coolant which is unlikely. The engine burns its coolant when the head gasket is corrupted or the head cracked)
Blue smoke = oil being burned in the combustion chamber (quite a lot of oil)
Black smoke = rich mixture (or just the soot in the exhaust system forced out, when revved)

Water is a natural byproduct of combustion. It will just have been more visible in the cold air.

Tut Tut Listen fella, I'll warn you now, I hold the monopoly on Noob Workshop threads, challenge me at your peril!
Plus I have a whole 4 days on you bro, that instantly makes me 96 hours more awesome. Razz

I only recently upgraded to a bike with a real engine capable of hitting the speed limits and I had the same concern as yourself.
Turns out my CG engine was too shit to produce enough heat out of the exhaust to create steam! Laughing
My CB500 only does the white plumes a bit when it's REALLY cold though.

Steam or smoke?

Steam is gaseous water which as it condenses appears white. Study a boiling kettle or perhaps your own breath on a cold day. Also the output of a power station cooling tower. Petrol burns to produce mostly carbon dioxide and water. On a cold damp day, you'll see lots of condensate. Or possibly you're leaking coolant.

Depending on quantity and type, burning oil can produce white smoke. Looks dirty white and may be tinged blue or brown. Smoke is particulate matter. Will leave a trace on paper if plentiful or paper smeared with Vaseline if not particularly plentiful. Steam just makes water droplets.

It is of course a possibility that there is a fistful of leaves or a mouse nest in your exhaust...

My air cooled twin is running well and isn't drinking oil. On the stock exhaust which cooled the combustion gas significantly, there would be loads of visible steam when cold. On aftermarket exhausts that don't cool the exhaust so much it needs to be colder for this to happen, and the effect goes away faster. My 125 made a little steam when KT was really cold.

Of course if you accidentally get a load of water down an exhaust when washing a bike or spray the inside of an exhaust with acf50/gt85/wd40 there will be much steam or smoke.

My Varadero constantly produces white smoke this time of year, its quite cool I pretend its a 2 stroke (fucking loser)

My old CB-1 smoked dark blue for a while before fully warm.

My new-old CB-1 smokes white smoke for a while now.

Does the Varadero get a chance to warm the exhaust up?

The old CB-1 has got a minor oil leak, that's fixed once the engine is warm and the materials fully dilated.

The new CB-1, pretty normal stuff, mine needed just a couple of minutes to get warmed up. I had the OEM exhaust, so the bike was pissing water right out of the exhaust drainage in the bottom of the silencer. I even got my shoe wet the first time. I was just standing next to the bike, and felt moisture in my shoe. Razz

It's not the engine that causes the white vapour, it's the cold exhaust. Thumbs Up
