I want to sell my motorbike now and wait a few years till I'm old enough to do my DAS.

I have a private number plate on it. With only a few months to go until I get my NCB.

I'm going to retain the number plate.

Can I keep the insurance going and get my 1 years no claims bonus even after I've sold it?

Will the insurance company be informed when I switch plates?

Personally, I'll keep the bike for the month, it isn't that long.

Also, don't forget you only have 2-3 years to use your NCB. It varies between insurers, for example some accept three, some will only accept a three year gap if they were your last insurer. Thumbs Up

As for private plates, I've never had one. But I think you have to write to the DVLA and get the bike back on its original plates and the logbook back in the old registration plate.

Keeping insurance running after you've sold the bike could be a bad idea. If an uninsured person crashes it then your insurer will be liable and they could come after you.

Re private plates, you have to write to dvla before you sell it to take them back off. Dvla will assign some other plates which may or may not be the original ones from the bike. They wouldn't tell your insurance so you would have to.

I thought you had to have a vehicle to retain the private plate on? Isn't that why the plate companies have loads of monkey bikes in boxes, that end up on eBay every 3 years?

You can put a private plate on retention, if on retention you need to ensure that every year you renew your retention certificate or you lose your rights to the registration.

Sure, you can.

You may not want to though.

Surely owning any bike is better than not owning any bike?

If you want to keep the insurance running for NCB would it not be possible to buy a frame with V5 (say £20 off ebay) and insure that?

Tbh I low sided yesterday on my R125. It just slipped. Now I can attribute it to the fact that the tires weren't warmed up but all I was doing is going in a straight line. This is the second time this has happened. First time was my fault though as I was being a bit silly. But this time I was just going dead straight.

The tires just don't have sufficient grip in this weather. In the summer it's a lot of fun, but now it's just meh. I'd rather be in a nice warm, leather seated car. Than in the pouring rain. Yes, I'm a Fair Weather Rider.

The bike is just a depreciating asset. Will clean it up, fix the damage and it'll sell for over 2k. In a few years time I might come back to it, do my DAS and get an R6 for the summer. But I'm going to have to hang up my cape for now.

My driving instructor has also told me a story about his friend who was in an accident. BOTH balls came off and he now has to take testosterone if he doesn't want to sound like a girl. He has no left leg and he only crashed at 30mph! Which also made me reconsider lol.
